it's me again still fretting over my Orchy 500 ..had a bad trip away in August with it collapsing in strong winds (the dome part)..vango say it must have been pitched wrong have now bought delta pegs and willing to lash it to car
we are away Half Term in Brecon and any tips on getting our Orchy pitched 'correctly' and/or a least stay upright in wind!!! would be a help
Thanks
I`m not sure if its a size difference, can`t see it really, but we had a very stormy week in Wales in August, and our 600 stood up to it with no problems....and no delta pegs at that time either.
Were Vango not specific as to how they thought you`d pitched it wrong?
The first outing we had we had a saggy front door, having looked at pictures of orchys on websites, we adjusted where we were pitching the front guys and solved the problem. These pictures showed them in a different position to were they were on the pitching video.
Have you tried pitching the bedroom pod facing the prevailing wind? Ours was like this last summer by default, so, in theory it `slipstreams` the tent.
I`m a newbie to camping myself so am no expert but I can only reassure you and say we have had no problems and are delighted with the tent.
I`m sure if Rex reads this he will advise you to get some of the clips he recommends and some extra guys ( cannot remember what they are called off the top of my head ) either that or buy a cabanon frame tent!!!!!
thanks for replying ..vango didn't say exactly just to review the pitching instructions..the way we were pitched meant the wind hit the side of the dome so will try the bedroom to wind approach if possible this time round, hopefully we were on a quite exposed site in August and it is just that ...
Once I've been away in it with no probs I shall get my confidence back!.....
There was a 600 on the same site a few pitches down that was fine so maybe the 600's dome is that bit bigger or something
I`ve not seen a 500 in the flesh, but there can`t be that much difference. I think you were just unlucky.
I am thinking of getting some spare pole sections myself.....just in case a gust causes a snapped pole......I don`t think the vango tents are particularly suseptable to this, I think its fibreglass poles in general.
Haven't been on in ages, but we have the Sumatra, well, had. Vango have had it since July "testing" it. Take a look at my gallery, think it's still in there.
Not happy at all about this tent and hope to get it sorted for next year. We've been camping for a long time and have camped in some sever weather with our Outwell vermont and now Bear Lake 6, they never budge and we have always used the cheap blue pegs that come with the tent, even with our BL6. Our retailer said that we either pitched it wrong or the canvas was too wet. Made me so mad.
anyway, I won't use the tent again as I don't trust it and I won't risk my family getting injured. Vango must have some issues as yours and mine arent' the only ones. will post when I hear anything about my tent.
Oh, by the way, the collapsing of our tent wasn't even in strong winds.
OMG what happened to the poles? They look like they melted and bent.........we had terrilbe gales in Pembrokeshire in August, and ours never even bowed in the wind.......what are those poles made of?
That`s c**p as I bet that tent cost bucks more than the Orchy..........now you`re making me nervous about mine
We went through so much with Vango and our retailer to get this tent tested. They originally took the tent back to inspect but just replaced the poles. Our retailer has chosen to ignore us and had finally got Vango to pick it up. I don't even care if we get it back or not.
I have seen the Orchy 600 set up at Go Outdoors and those poles didn't flex at all and the kicker.....it wasn't even staked into the ground and it was a windy day.
I have no idea what is up with the tent and looks like a pole defect or the poles aren't strong enough to support the weight of the canvas.
We bought the tent as a sample tent so only paid 175 but still a good amount. We loved the tent for weekends but only used it the one night.
I think for the most part, the Orchy's are fine but seem to have a few problem ones just like the other manufacturers.
I honestly think Vango has just forgotten about us and think it's time to email them and find out what's going on with our tent.
Make a nuisence of yourself, then they won`t ignore you Troublesome people always get sorted quicker.
I`m far from any expert, but if it has the same poles as mine I cannot imagine they would be strong enough to support canvas, esp. when wet........it seems illogical to me they would do that.....do you think, as it was a sample tent it came with the wrong poles?......maybe if you could get Vango to replace with better poles it`s be okay.... then you could sell it if you`re still not in love.
Ideally they sould refund you, but I`m not sure they will with it being a sample.but I`m sure I`m waffling and you know all this.
What a shame, like I say, we love our Orchy...but are considering a canvas purchase for cooler weather camping....shan`t buy yours though
We bought an Orchy 400 this summer (our first tent) and had a problem with it when we camped in September. During very wet and windy weather the front seemed like it was going to collapse. We were unsure whether it was the design (the front does seem to 'collect' the wind)or our lack of pitching skill. However, when we pitched during a later break the poles seem to take on an 'S' shape and we can't really work out why. Having checked the DVD and taken our time we're mystified as to the problem. Anyway, we're a bit concerned with this tents performance and are looking at an Outwell, Bear Lake 4 or Vermont!
I have a vango orchy 600, and while it did not ley us down in the wind, i do have 2 issues with it. Saggy front door and too much tent material at rear to pitch properly. I do not understand vangos attitude, especially as they carry a lifetime guarentee. I e.mailed them, but their response was not what i expected from a leading tent manufacturer. Tent and footprint cost just over 200.00. I for one will never touch a vango tent again. Will be buying another next year.Sadly, not sure what to do with this one, but have no confidence in it.
