Hi BG
Who cares, campers who are concerned for the welfare and safety of their families,
After all as you say you take advice or you don't, the consequences are down to the campers own choice, and responsibility.
But regulars know on here all the problems members get with poorly made and designed lightweight tents.
All the best
Rex.

Hi All,

I am very new to camping and would like stick my oar in.

From the comments made are you saying that unless i buy a canvas tent i am putting my family in danger? That would potentially put me off camping as i would not buy a canvas tent being such newcomers and if as you suggest any other tent would be unsafe,I would not put my family at risk.

Also, not everybody can afford 1k+ for a tent ,especially in today's financial climate.

No he's not saying that. It's merely an opinion based on the fact that he has had 30 (or more?) years of camping experience and that he thinks that canvas tents willl stand up to the weather better than most other tents, that they are warmer (because they are made of canvas) and they breath and are more waterproof. He is not suggesting anyone goes out and spends more than they cannot afford on a tent but that there are many bargins to be found as canvas tents last a lot longer  - up to 30 years or more if cared for properly.

If you read back old posts Fostermum has picked up many (well one or two or three or ......) very good second hand canvas tents and hasn't paid ££££ for the whole lot - let alone each one.  Others have too. Some of us would love to own one brand new but money dictates otherwise. Many people who now have canvas didn't have to start with, I think Francais (sorry if I am wrong) started off with an eBay special and learned from there.

It is all a matter of personal choice and no one is forcing anyone to buy what they can't afford or don't like, it's all just the benefit of year or camping and personal opinon.

(not meaning any offence to anyone but it's all getting a bit heated and verging on the unfriendly at times  Please don't have a go at me as I am not intending having a go at anyone)

Oh yes nearly forgot to say Welcome Matt + Lu (or have I said it before) See what you are letting yourself in for

Hi all
The comments made and why I made them is perfectly clear to any member with normal intelligence, What I will say for members who were incapable of working it out or just want to cause trouble. so her it is again. The good quality canvas tents made by makers who have quality control within their factories, and use the best material for both frame or pole systems are safer in high winds, have a dry and warmer atmosphere within the tent, will stick up to extremely bad weather and wind and ultimately be safer to camp in in adverse conditions any time of the year.
That is a fact. All tents sold in the UK are or should be up to a certain standard. and the vast majority are only recommended for two season use, and most makers I believe now are adding this to their selling information.
And out of the 182 days they are recommended for around 175 of those days will be safe and comfortable to use all those tents from the £50 mini dome to the very big family tunnel tents, but should you be unlucky enough to be out under canvas the other 7 days it is likely that your tent will be destroyed and with the wrong action by yourselves could lead to injury.
Go to this site,it is the only one I know that advertises on the net that gives you the information what
a tent is recommended for Click by Brand and check them out.
Camperlands
And please read the whole post before you come back with post that are not relative to the original,I am not knocking your tent your choice.People who buy good quality tents are not snobs they are just very sensible campers, and know what is best for family camping, through years of experience.
I hope that is now clear to some of you, if you are happy with your tent then that is the tent for you,I think that is the third time I have quoted that in this post And after you have used it for two or three years you will then have an Idea what you may want with the next tent you buy,
Myself I prefer the tried and tested Cabanon frame tents
and my personal choice of them is the Andorra This tent is the best designed tent ever made I used to have two now I have no large cabanon tents left But both have gone to campers who understand the benefits of a strong self standing frame and a CGI canvas sheet. you can not in my opinion buy better(My opinion)
All the best
Rex.

I've seen quite a few families having to go home early because of ruined tents, (don't recall any being cabanon though)  Our Cabanons have been in horrendous weather over the years our pacific being one of the few undamaged last summer. If you can afford one they are the best tents (in our opinion) But if we didn't have one we would still go camping, its down to you what you choose.

We own synthetic tents also but I know which one I would trust the most in strong wind and rain and its not snobbery its years of experience.

Our first cabanon bought 13 years ago is still going strong and I would still take it in bad weather over a lightweight tent anyday.

Hi again
Yes the very best tents DeWaard and Karston even bought used are expensive. But Cabanon tents are not Far behind in the quality stakes. sunncamp make a good cotton frame tent that will not require a mortgage bought new. But the canvas they use is not up to the standard of CGI and I do not think they are pree shrunk so should be left to dry on its frame the first time it is used heavy dew is usually sufficient to do this but a good hose down and left to dry at home will make sure it is shrunk correct.
Price, don't be afraid to buy a cabanon tent second hand.
But always email the seller and ask if it as been treated with a waterproofing chemical,if the answer is yes [[do not buy it.]]it will have lost its breath-ability. And it is possible to buy three year old Cabanon frame tents, for as little as £300 or even less if you are lucky But if you require a big family tent some of the very big cabanon 10 year old +6 berth frame tents go for around £100.
And if you are a young family the cabanon pyramid range of four tents are now showing on eBay Evey year for half the new price and they should suit the fashion conscious camper
If your choice is the tunnel type of tents and the Biscayas and lake series tents are too expensive I believe some of the polyester and nylon Outwells have pole strengthening bars fitted down both sides I would recommend that you look out these tents as the pole system will certainly be stronger from rear wind shunts. Also the Khyam QE lightweight tents this year must have strenghtend their pole system with an added bar as they now recommend their family tents for three season worth noting, if you are in the market for a lightweight tent link at the bottom of the page.
My knowledge of these tents is only what I read on these pages from members who have or now own them,
But the information given by all our experienced campers is to help new or existing members to get the best out of their camping,At this very time I am receiving good honest information from experienced Folding camper members,on how to care for my newly acquired camper.even though I had ten years of caravan experience The FC as many differences and I need their help and they have been very helpful to me.
It is not I will repeat Not to knock your choice of tent
It is to pass on honest and true information. I do not guess and when it is just my opinion I say so.
All the best
Rex.

Hi all

I would love a Cabanon tent, but it is not just the initial outlay that puts me off. Like many other thousands of city dwellers we live in a terraced house with no garage and no room out the front of the house for a drive, so no trailer for us. All our camping gear had to go into the loft.
This thread does have a really negative vibe, which is unfortunate as this is such a friendly site, even for a mainly lurker like me.
We all have various levels of camping experience, and our family has had many brilliant holidays in our polyester tents over the year.
Yes, it is personal choice how you camp, but please remember that many factors are involved in making those choices and we should all take care that people do not feel put down by what we say in these forums.

Hi binks
Sorry you feel that way I have tried to get it over a few times and I will keep trying. The tent that suits you is the tent for your circumstances. Val and I used cotton canvas tents that come in two bags 22KGS each we kept our in the attic I am disabled with multi joint arthritis and val is 70 years old We found it hard work but we did it. if you have not got room for a trailer a roof rack and rear rack is the answer. Yes they all cost money but can be bought for less than the cost of a week in Spain for four,or the cost of a small trailer.
But you don't have to get them. The choice is yours 100%
What I have tried to do is pass on the advantages of good quality tents and recommended a cotton frame tents that I have used for well over 20 years.
Campers on this forum have used basic lightweight tents for a few years, One of our members who is in the business as posted his knowledge on the subject
Here and Gary's professional comments are nearer the facts than mine.
Most people new to camping quite normally look around the tent displays and choose a tent on its cosmetic appearance that is a normal thing for all humans to do.
Some times they will choose a good one, by the saying more you pay the more you get.But cost will always come into then equation.
What this discussion is about is talking about the pro and cons for all types of tents and not the campers that use them. No one likes someone else saying that the tent, car, house,or any other thing they own is not the best, and that is what this post is saying not that the tent you may have chosen is no good, you would not have to be told that you would realize the first time you used it. the post is saying what I consider are the best tents and why, It as brought a response from Gary in another post which as helped me in my quest to find out the life expectancy of Polycotton Canvas, and he also gave his educated estimate of the life of nylon and polyester tents.
The difference between transporting a large tunnel tent and a 6 berth frame tent is one 25 kgs bag.
So do not look at this post as a knock at you ,it is not.
the first post in my opinion that is correct and as mow been confirmed by a professional with his own test and honest results.
So once again if the tent you use dose all you require then it is the tent for you, but lightweight tunnel tent owners regardless of make please check the weather on a daily basis this can be done by mobile phone and if you are on an exposed coastal site be prepared to strike camp and sit it out in your car or B+B but once again that is a decision you have to make.Print a Copy of this
It will give you a good idea of what to expect from a weather forecast and wind speed indicator.
