Hi All.

I can understand why we have the "Caravan Club", but why is the club for folk who camp in tents named the "Camping & Caravan Club", surley it should just be the "Camping Club", as there is already a club for caravaners, is it that, because caravans are so big they need two clubs!, as for the folk who have a TT/FC they should be able to join either, or made to join both maybe, as they enjoy the best of both worlds, or worst depending how you view things, personally I think it would be best for all concerned if the two afformentioned clubs merged, then we would just have the one club, or am I missing the point in some way.

That is like saying 'why have we got Tesco and Sainsburys?'.  'People don't deserve a choice of where to shop, so lets just merge them'.  I don't think so.

It is all about choice and nobody has to join either of them, let alone both. What a really strange post.

Cheers  Ratty

Alternatively we could have another that was just for tents -  'Camping club'. We already have the UKCS 'club' which is good cos there are no fees to pay.

I agree with the fact that people should have choice, and I too would like to see a club just for tents.     However you would have to be carefull, as what you don't want is a tent club, to be dominated by those that think that the only true camping is in a small backpacking tent with minumum equipment.

Hi Francias
The present C&C Club was started for campers in what was the only unit at the time,a tent. The caravan club was started for caravans and wheeled units.
The camping club in 1983 changed its name to the Camping and Caravanning club first mistake when you go off in your caravan and sleep in it you are camping,
Camping in tents as always been perceived as a basic way of camping and not considered suitable for the Caravan club sites. Although they have provided basic pitches for tents on some CC club sites for many years although segregated.
Regards
Rex.

Hi Bernie I have discussed this with farmers who the only way they could start a camp site was through the affiliation with the two Clubs as certified sites this leaves the work to the clubs rather than the local government,so even if a group of farmers or land owner would like to start a club for tents they would find the clubs have it sown up pretty tight. You see the red tape even stretches to our way of relaxing from the rat race but the majority of CS and CL of the two clubs will accept tents and are usually very pleasant sites and well worth looking out in the district you want to go to,but you do have to join the clubs to use them,{wrong} as club site you do not have to be a member to use their own sites.
Regards
Rex.

The C & C C was originally the Camping Club but as it catered for all types of campers the name was changed. There is a section within it called The British Caravanners Club for caravanners, and a section for lightweight campers, but no separate section for ordinary family tenters.

If you need a separate club for tenters then the only answer is to start one.

The nature of the beast is that many caravaners started as tent campers.  Then moved sideways.  The CCC covers all units.

As for tent only club doubt that would work now.   Season to short,  why limit yourself to camping weather when hard standings will give you a site that will be used all year.

Which club, both or none, It's all down to personal choice.  I like having an option.

Clubs joining up,  I hope not.  While they are separate you have market forces keeping prices down.  A monopoly would give them a licence to print money.

21% or just over 13 million people in the UK are into camping and caravanning making it one of the largest participation hobbies in this country.

All in all I am suprprised that there are so few clubs associated with it. Then again, probably the vast majority of people who do camp and caravan, do so outwith the confines of club sites and club activities.

Because my Caravan is of the Pop Up variety, I suppose Francais would have me thrown out of the C&CC and forced to join the Jack in the Box Caravanning Club whose President is Mr Zebedee.

As others have said the CC&C was originally called the Camping Club. This was probably fine when the ownership of caravans was less widespread and tent camping the norm. However I expect they saw clearly that the only way to expand and increase/retain membership was to include the word 'Caravan' in their name.

There already are two such clubs:

The Fell Club

The Backpackers Club
