Get something like this for the kids. They can splash about to their hearts content. This is my 2 year old little Princess enjoying the wet at Eskdale last easter.

Hi Angela.
It is filled with lots of items that you have to look for. In this particular one there are beads with letters, a pom pom, dice, elastic band etc...you get the idea.

You twist and turn it to find all the items which can be ticked on a score sheet. Or you can just work down the list printed on the top.

Some items are easy to find. Others take a little more time but the penny is almost impossible. My brother did find it once, so I know it is in there somewhere.

It will keep all amused for hours though, especially those determined to be the first to find the penny.

Oh and it is made with pretty tough platic that my kids have dropped many times.

We have 2 boys aged 4 and 11 (so 3 and 10 lat year when we went to France).  I know this goes against the whole camping thing but we got them a portable DVD player for in the car (very long journey) and that was a godsend one story evening.  They both sat and watching a film (with headphones) til it passed and then were straight back outside playing in the playground area with 20 other kids from various countries.  They spent most of the week there and even if we went out for the day they'd be checking to see if they could get back in time to see their friends. It was lovely as playground was right opposite our pitch so little one could play with the other kids without realising he was being watched like a hawk the entire time and made him feel very grown up.

We also take lots of books and the usual stickers and colouring and a little penny floater football and usually connect 4 (even if little one isn't sure how to play he likes to make patterns with the counters and keeps him entertained).

My two are now 15 and 12, but when they were younger, and even before we went camping, I used to spend the week's leading up to our holiday packing a backpack for each of them.  I would get them maybe a colouring book, a drawing/writing pad, new pens/pencils/colouring pencils, a handheld battery toy, a comic, a new book, etc.  They were not allowed to look in the bag until we were just setting off in the car and it was a big part of our holiday.  They then had stuff to do wherever we were heading and anything they bought themselves while we were there, went in the bag to bring home.  As they got older we still take writing stuff, they now write a diary of the holiday, a new book, comics have become magazines and I sometimes buy them a new DS game, but it still works well for us
