I used to use an old blue tarp as a canopy, now I've splurged £20 on a new green one.
Advantage over gazebos, awnings, daytents etc. is that they don't attract attention from site owners looking to surcharge anything that moves. And they can be configured to cope with changing conditions. I use them with a load of old guys and upright poles I've saved from past tents.
For me camping shouldn't be colour coordinated - I much prefer to see a pitch that honestly portrays a collection of gear amassed over the years - whatever colour
