Hi we're planning our first camping trip this year and have spent the last few weeks  accumulating the basics we'll need.  I've just spent an enjoyable few hours looking at the pics of everyones tents and having a good nosey at what you have but I'm in a panic now as I noticed everyone seems to have airbeds, we've bought camp beds.  Is there something you know that we don't? I also wanted to ask if there's anything else we'll need other than sleeping bags to keep warm at night?  Any advice greatly appreciated as our first trip is at Easter.

Hi loobyloo2.  I have campbeds and airbeds.  I do think the campbeds are good for a few reasons - one being that they give extra storage underneath!! they don't deflate like many airbeds do, and you also get none of "wobble" when somebody else is moving on the airbed!!

however I do find them a little uncomfortable if used on their own - not sure which ones you have but I put a folded blanket on top of our campbed to soften it a little, or if you have enough space in your car an old quilt on top of it would be even more comfortable.

We usually take some fleece blankets/throws with us for extra warmth, either on top of your sleeping bag or underneath - or even just sitting outside.  We have a few cheap ones we bought from primark.  they are nice to snuggle up in when sitting outside in a chair also!!

hope this helps.

Happy camping - you will love it, we started two years ago and I am itching to get back out in our tent!!!

I loobyloo
It depends on the quality of camp beds you have bought, every one I have ever seen made for camping are of low quality small and uncomfortable, this is why most campers prefer the comfort of airbeds in mt opinion the only camp beds that are more comfy than an air bed are the carp anglers bed chairs but these require a bedroom at least 2.3 meters long if they have sloping sides these are the ones I recommend the three legs as they call them are good but the Nash bed chairs are superb but very expensive Beds
But some members recommend putting an air bed on top of the cheaper camp beds.I have never done that so can not comment but these are the beds we used in our tent here
These are slightly higher than most carp beds and very comfortable and the all have individual adjustable legs so your bed is always level no mater how sloping the ground is.
Regards
Rex.

Hiya, I use an airbed my oh uses a campbed, he prefers being up high of the ground, I prefer to be lower! I think its just a case of personal preferance we started with double airbeds and I shared with dd and oh with ds but the kids kept hogging the bed so now we have our own, some people prefer the sleeping mats!

Wow those carp beds look amazing!  Me and hubbie have sunncamp deluxe XL camp beds, didn't realise until we got them home how huge they are, looked a lot smaller in the shop! haven't spent a whole night on them yet but can't wait.  The kids have got the basic ones you see in the argos, we've borrowed them for the first trip so can always go out and buy airbeds or camp beds if they are uncomfortable.  Thanks for the tip about blankets/fleeces i've got loads about the house stored in blanket chests so we'll definately take them with us.  As soon as we get back I'll post some pics of our tent.  Anyone camping at easter will spot us, we'll be the ones with all the shiny new gear and no idea what to do with it!

This year we've swapped airbeds to campbeds, for a few reasons really.  Firstly because we had one hellish trip last year where I forgot the pump and we had to sleep on our recliner chairs for the weekend - we did try borrowing from other campers but everyone seemed to have campbeds.  They're great for laying in the sun but crap for a good nights sleep.  Secondly because OH constantly moaned that we rolled together and thirdly deflation.  The plus sides, as already said above, are that there's space for storage underneath, they take less to pack in the car, no puncture problems and you don't have to wait for them to inflate.

Hi loobyloo2.

As you will notice from Rex's camp bed info, good kit don't come cheap, I have gone for two "ThermaRest DreamTime XL", they fasten together to make a Queensize bed, more of a sleeping system than an airbed, my previous bed was a Campingaz Double Quickbed £10 from ASDA (piece of nonsense), the "DreamTime XL" is in a differant ballpark, RRP is £170 each, although got mine from www.theoutdoorshop.com for £119 each, still silly money for what is basicly an airbed, but they do come with a lifetime warranty, should you need to use it, you wont, I also have a "ThermaRest ProLite 3 Regular" for backpacking and cycle touring, RRP now is £70, I have been using that for over 5 years and is as good as the day I bought it, £40 back then, so in the long run, the "ThermaRest" stuff is good value. remember the old saying buy cheap, buy twice!.

Comfort wise, self-inflating mats have been wonderful for me. I have always suffered from sciatica with airbeds and back ache in general. I wasn't expecting much as they appear to be little more than glorified roll mats but I have never had such a comfortable nights sleep. A complete revelation for me and better for my back than my bed at home. Only trouble was my son kept sliding down his in the night and almost out of the tent in the morning! Temporarily solved by using a holdall full of clothes as a 'buffer' at his feet but maybe jersey sheets for next year.

I only had the cheap ones from Aldi as on a budget and hopefully I'll get another few seasons out of them.

Each to their own, I hate airbeds!!

We tried them for 2 or 3 camping trips but didn't like them at all. All that air just acted as a huge heat sink pulling the heat away from the body, Brrrrrrrr!
Then there's that sea sickening roll and the worry of puncturing/deflating.

So instead I've returned to using my 16 year old ThermaRest.
What a difference. Warm, comfortable, simple set up and easily transported.

A fleece blanket between the ThermaRest and the sleeping bag for those colder nights guarentees a good nights sleep.

We swapped from airbeds last yr to camp beds. Best thing we have done for a good nights sleep. We do however have self inflating mattresses on top for extra comfort. We got fed up with airbeds slowly deflating or being punctured. Paid £25 each for the beds.

Martin.

Campbeds for my Brats and myself, they used to sleep on anything but a campbed is so much easier to climb out of when you reach a certain age! and the extra storage comes in handy, to add some extra comfort we lay camping mats on top of the beds.

Thanks again everyone for all your advice. We have 2 of those self inflating mattresses (hubbie bought them when he went touring with his motorbike) I would never have thought of putting them on top of the camp beds but I will now!  Booked 14 nights in August today at Smytham Manor, North Devon.  Only 6 weeks to our first trip.  Can't wait.

Hi again loobyloo
There are a few items I believe every tent camper should have for safe and easy camping. First is enough Delta pegs for all your guy ropes, at least one pack of four Clingons.
And to make adjusting your guy ropes easy and safe clamcleat line-locks you will find all the links to these in my home page here
If in doubt ask the members
Rex.

We like airebeds coz we can snuggle up in our double sleepingbag, surely with two campbeds it's two sleepign bags and half the fun of camping is geographically impossible, or am I being thick (wouldn't be the first time)?

We have always used airbeds...and have used lots of them down the years, cheap and expensive in search of the most comfortable. I actually dissagree with my esteemed colleagues above. In the case of airbeds I have found it is more a question of personal comfort/choice rather than cost. I have used several 'raised' beds, beds with separate airpockets including the popular coleman comfort, and other well known brands. By far the most comfortable for us is the old fashioned rubberised bed usually coloured blue and red on either side. We place a quilt over the airbed then the sheet over that, and use a further quilt in the normal way on top. This gives the best night sleep of any we have used. The only downside is that there doesnt appear to be a queen or king sized version.
