Sorry to disagree with just about everyone else, but I'm so keen to get where I'm going that I just wouldn't have the patience to plod along at 60.
When the back seat was full of kids had thee biggest roofbox Halfords made. It recommended 55 top speed, but was fine for speed limits of UK and continental motorways.
Living in the NE it's a long way anywhere South or abroad, & we can cover up to 600 miles in a day. In France (never speed in UK ) that's 10 hours with a trailer but less than 7 1/2 with a top box.
I didn't think there was a speed restriction on towing in France?... damn! OH isn't going to be happy if that is the case
You're right; apart from where a section of road has a specific towing speed limit there is no general reduction for trialers in France.
Before getting our folding camper we had a roofbox and then a trailer. For longer trips we used both.
Trailers can be left packed ready to go and are easier to load and unload. The disadvantages are the reduced (UK) speed limits and parking/security problems if you stop on the way to/from sites.
The problem with the roofbox for us was that our vehicle height (Zafira) made it difficult to load and unload. I also had problems with multi-story car parks on a couple of occasions.
What I did find was that a steady 60 with the trailer worked out about 10% more fuel efficient than the car with roofbox doing mostly 70 mph.

Thanks Stevie - thats what I thought Thanks for the clarification!
One of the only reasons that I convinced OH of our trailer need was the lack of speed restriction in France!!
