Does anyone have any experience - good or bad - with making a claim for a tent or its contents?

I have just renewed both house and travel insurance and found myself answering questions about value of stuff when away from the house etc.

I hate to ask, but has anyone had "stuff" taken from a highly secure zipped up tent and made a successful claim?  Anyone claimed for weather damage?

To date we have been lucky on all counts but I'm very interested to hear people's stories etc.

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is a "highly secure" tent? Unless you padlock all the zips together, and the fabric is "knife proof", there is nothing secure about a tent whatsoever. Is this how your insurance company are wording things?

Fortunately theft is rare on campsites  as we are all in the same boat.  If a campsite has a history of it don't go.    Tents are not secure nor can they be made secure.  Padlocks on zips only inform people that you have let valuables inside.  Most of us use our cars for the movable electric items .  Camping paraphernalia left in tent.

Weather damage, never heard of it being claimed for as you always have the option of taking it down.

Apologies - I was being sarcastic!

I am aware of friends who successfully claimed for the loss of their tent during the bad storms the night of the Boscastle flooding etc. Their claim was limited to their tent, no contents, and they managed to get £400 - the limit on their policy for a suitcase/bag - they argued that their tent was 2 bags worth (tent and poles).

I was just interested in any people's stories...

thats a really good question actually.... if you actually add up the replacement cost of all the kit that is used it is (or can be!) a phenomenal amount to just leave 'lying around' as it were....

I would be interested in hearing about any successful claims too, or indeed are there any specialist insurers?....

i would happily insure my tent and equipment for a monthly fee as seperate on my contents insurance, cos im sure like a lot of others on here my kit including tent and gear is in excess of £1000 to replace new for old.

A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

We have tent insurance and trailer insurance through the Camping and Caravanning Club.  Covers tent and contents both at home (in shed) and whilst away.  Each policy costs approx £5 per month.

Thanks RoseMae - I'll definitely look into that, I would happily pay £5 a month if I knew I was covered for any eventuality camping-wise....
When you actually add up all the little bits (and some not so little!!) they actually come to quite a grand sum!!

Have just done a quote on CCC site - premium for £1500 tent & equipment is £47 a year - which I think is pretty reasonable...

In all the years of camping all over europe, we have only had somthing stolen once.

Our gas fridge, we were staying at guines (spelling) near Calais on our last day before leaving.

That used to be a very good family oriantated (sp) when we went as kids in the 80s but became a stop off point for booze cruisers from the uk. Iam convinced that it was some of these British chavs that stole it, they even left us a bottle of milk!.

I had the last laugh though, the fridge had to be set up totaly level with a spirit level to even work, it probably ended up dumped in a layby near sangatte!lol.

just add it to your house insurance as a named item.  Will cost around 2.50 a month extra.

I would love to insure mine but as it is not made any more what is the point and,any way no one has heard of it or could perhaps ever think about buying one at such a high price if it were to day available a few thousand pounds .I did insure my lichfield tent once but what i got back was the cost of one repair on the flysheet and it would have been just as cheap to buy a new one. It depends on the tent i guess.regards to all richard.
