Last year I borrowed a "Bionaire" ceramic heater from a caravanning friend of mine for us to use when we went camping (my first time, and Mrs Jewelly's childhood re-kindled!)
It had three settings, from memory they were 1kw, 1.5kw and 2kw.
I think most of them have overheat and tilt protection switches on them - although I'm not sure about leaing them on unattended (ie whilst you are not there, or potentially when you are asleep.
For such a small device, it really did kick out some heat, and made our tent positively cosy.
We turned it on in the evening after the kids went to bed to keep the chill off as they went to sleep, and then I'd put it back on again very early in the morning (I was usually awake by six) to take the chill off again.
For our two (who were two and five) it was perfect.
I bought a similar model from Costco at the end of last year for £14
