Hi all,

We tried an EHU yesterday with 3 sockets, it was fine with a fan heater in one socket, a radio and a simple lamp in the others but if i swapped the radio for a second heater or an electric kettle then it just tripped out.

Can someone tell me why? Is it to do with the voltage?

It was cold so we really needed 2 heaters and was gutted when we couldn't have them both on.

There are threads on here with tables showing how to convert volts to amps but the main rule is do not use 2 things at the same time that produce heat

So no kettle and heater for example

I doubt there are any campsites that supply enough power for 2 heaters

We were away this weekend and had a heater but unfortunately when we wanted coffee then the heater had to be turned off whilst the kettle boiled.

We should have taken the whistling kettle lol

Thanks Angie,

In that case can anyone recommend a really powerful heater if we can only run one at a time?

Is it worth getting a gas heater to compliment the electric one? We have an 8 month year old baby so had to keep the heater running pretty much all the time.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt Bell
The RDC hook up assembly you have as a 10 amp double pole MCB trip fuse
A 2 KW heater require 8.7 amps for constant use this only leaves you 1.3 amp for all other use
All electrical appliances will have what Watts are required to run them item you will need to convert that to amps you can use this calculator to convert all you electrical appliances so you will know what you can run off your EHU together. Ohms Law Calculator
As an example how to use the calculator.
Top box Calculate For Current(I) type the watts into the power/watts box 2KW = 2000 type 230 into the Voltage/volts box It = and it will give you the amps 8.69565 for 2KW
Regards
Rex.
PS 2KW is as powerful as you will be able to go with your hook up assembly.

As Rex says ( and Rex is a man who knows a thing or 2 ) , 2kw is as powerfull as you can go without tripping the EHU.

A gas heater is always a possibility but you obviously have to be extremely carefull with a little one around.

Gas lamps obviously also give out some heat so that may help but again, caution with the little one.

All I can suggest is that you try and keep the tent closed as much as possible when it is really cold and dress baby warmly (thin layers work much better than 1 or 2 thick ones).

A warm drink always helps too (no hot toddys for the baby lol)

It wont be long before the tiny person is big enough to not sit still long enough to get cold :)

Can I ask.. at night do you insulate under the airbeds and use blankets as well as sleeping bags? Makes a huge difference.

There must be threads on this site about keeping babies warm if you do a search or you could start a new thread entitled " Keeping babies warm in tents.. help" or something similar

Our baby is 14 and never cold so sorry to say I cant be of much help. Just suggestions that make sense to me but there are many people on here with babies who will be able to help you alot more

One really powerfull heater may in fact need more current than two ordinary ones - so that's not the solution.

Add it all up, and if it comes to more than 2300w you're going to trip ot a 10Amp EHU...or the box, if it's rated to less amps.

The trick is to heat YOU, not the tent. A tent is only an uninsulated plastic bag after all and the heat is going straight out through the roof. If you dress properly and use good bedding you don't need to worry about heating the tent. I've taken all my kids camping since they were four months old, in Scotland, in April etc, and never used a heater, just layers of clothes and a good baby sleeping bag.

Try boiling a kettle using gas? Use rechargable lanterns for light. Get a tent thats got a SIG so heat isnt lost under the walls. Then, a modest heater should do the job, and give you a bit spare for a radio/portable telly/GHD's etc.
