Hi all,
Just got a new tent ,an Outwell Utah 6, and am planning to take it for a local trip this weekend to see it up before easter week. Trouble is weather isnt forecast great and there is a good chance it would be put away wet. We have absolutely no room to dry the thing at home as its a very small flat (and a large tent!). IF we dont get it up this weekend we will be making the trip to cornwall not having a clue what the tent is like to be put up or if its damaged!
Any suggestions welcomed!
Tah
------------- Why SHE wanted a bloody eight birth for two? Theyll be more space she says, more for you to fill i says!
You need to find a way around this, if you pack up a tent and leave it wet for over about a week you'll end up with a manky, smelly and mouldy tent which will be ruined in a very short space of time.
You can happily dry a tent inside by putting it in the bath initially if it's very wet and then hanging it over bannisters, bits of furniture etc. but it may well require a bit of effort.
We managed to dry our friends diablo 600 draped over furniture in the conservatory (which is quite small) every so often we would shift it along a bit so another portion of the tent could dry out. Did make the place smell a bit fusty though.
spread it out in the flat as best you can whack heating up and go out to dinner come back turn tent about and go out to the pub come back turn tent and go to bed
I take it living in flat you don'T have a secure garden, but if you have a freind who does you could pitch it there, it won't matter if it rains on it, just pack it away when it does dry out
Were students, the rooms were in are about 6m by 5m alot smaller than the ten itself! Suppose we could go to cornwall with faith and if there's something up with the tent either fix it for the week or buy a cheap tent to do us for the week! Pretty confident putting it up, and were both civil engineers so id hope we can handle it! The only thing im worried about is damage! All the bits are there i checked when we bought it!
Would have been nice to get it up though! Ill just keep checking the forecasts!
Ingenious suggestions though! Especially hair dryer!

If you pack any tent up wet and leave it for longer than about three days max you WILL end up with a mouldy tent. There is no "if" about this.
You don't have to test pitch it at a campsite though. Just nip down the local park or patch of waste ground for a couple of hours on the next sunny day.
Or you can dry it in even a small flat. Stick it in the bath and keep fluffing it up untill it's not dripping, then spread it out in the lounge over the furniture overnight. You'll probably have to do this over two or three nights total to make sure it's totally dry but that's life. You're going to have to have a contingency plan for drying it out eventually anyway, so why not start planning now?
It is possible to dry a large tent in a small room.
I have dried a Coleman Colombus 6 Berth in my back room, which is only 12 Foot x 8 Foot..........I spread it out best I could and turned on the C/H, kept moving it around until it was fully dried (took about 2 days)
I did not pack it away but, took it down to our local park on the first nice day and pitched it, so it aired and I could make sure it WAS fully dry. (we have a very small garden you see)
As Val said, there are times you will have to take a wet tent home and it needs to be completely dried everytime so working out how to do it is a good idea.
If you know someone with a garage where you could hang it then that would be good. Or someone with a spare bedroom
We have no garden and have to dry cotton and TC tents in a spare bedroom. Quite a sight seeing a huge canvas thing strewn over all manner of items but hey it works ;)
I am not sure I would want to dry a tent with a hair dryer though
Students, So do you have a hall or gym at college /UNI where you could erect the tent one evening perhaps? or on the playing fields, or in the grounds , on a fine day to check it over before you go?
Do you have a bannister in the flat you could hang the flysheet over to dry , or a fire escape staircase outside? It won't take too long to dry if its well spread out .
I have dried big tents draped over sofa and chairs overnight in the living room , and hung it higher so it aired more by jamming a guyline over the top of the doors too.
