I know there are a lot of posts on here about using tarps to provide extra sheleter, but I just wanted to check something with those who are more experienced than me.
We are pretty regular campers, but we are about to head off for our first camping holiday now that our son has started toddling. Because of that, we want a bit more shelter than is provided by our tent (a Quechua T4.2).
As this is going to be our first trip I don't want to spend a huge amout of money (we just want to make sure the little one like it...) so I was wondering if I could just use a normal tarp to create the shelter? This is just a plain old tarp that you can get from a hardware shop (blue, sort of woven plasticky material) and not anything designed for camping.
I have a few spare steel tent poles that I have picked up over the years and was planning on rigging up a pretty simple canopy/awning for our tent with the tarp, the poles and as many guy ropes and pegs as the wind requires. If it works I'll get a few more accesories for the future, but we were hoping to just start off as simply as possible.
So basically my questions is, will this tarp do the trick or do I need something more fancy (or camping oriented)?
Thank you very much for any tips.
Cheers,
James

------------- We are not walking with the ghosts of the dead;
We are alive with the spirit of our passion.
When we went camping in Northern Spain, the Spanish campers had erected various shelters using tarp, poles and guy ropes( it isn't green in the north for nothing). It is just a matter of making sure any water runs off it, rather than collecting in it, adding weight.
They even had flooring underneath it along with the standard table and tablecloth.
Just enjoy your camping James and Co. You do not have to spend a fortune and it is sensible to start off with the basics then if you like it you can then make more informed disicions about what you want to buy - the main thing is for you and your little family to have fun together.
Yes. you've got exactly the right idea in my book.
I've done exactly as you propose - check out my gallery images & also these - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/tents/preview.asp?id=473 - which show my tarp in action. I secure it to the actual tent using streetstall clamps (cheap & on Ebay)
I use a selection of upright poles I've acquired over the years, but I would make the suggestion that you invest in some Clingons http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/tents/preview.asp?id=473 instead of using the tarp's own eyelet holes. They are cheap as chips and transform the tarp's strength. Much cheaper than spending up to £100 on a high-end tarp (ones in pix cost under £8, itching to try my new £18 posh one next weekend).
I much prefer the tarp solution as you can configure it according in limitless ways, and also to cope with different weathers and changing wind direction. To me it's using initiative, which is a lot of what camping's about.

Hairywol...Like you am considering a tarp(but not blue). You may consider adapting yours slightly by adding an extra pole in the middle...just a tad taller than those on the corners to form an apex so any rainwater runs straight off and doesn't form a pool in the middle.
EHU. Got them in a sale at Focus for Xmas lighting a few years ago, but they're great for camping.
I have a much longer rope light I once tried out for lighting in the tent, but it was too much like Santa's Grotto . Everyone was asking me where Rudolph was.

Blue woven tarp is fine, though I think you my notice quite a loud rustle off it at night. So if it works and you want to invest in something more purpose built, Decathlon do a tarp and poles.
I agree totally with the idea that a tarp and poles is a flexible shelter option and with camping ingenuity ( plus cling-ons and delta ground anchors) you can devise a shelter that works with any tent. See profile pic for our (Admittedly rather expensive Weschel light weight) tarp in action!

I like the tarp & set-up foggers - but what do you do with all that hay?

The giant hay bale was thoughtfully put there by the campsite owner to give us some more shelter as it was wet and wild weekend in Notts in 2006 when that pic was taken.
We loved it so much we have tried to take a giant hay bale with us camping every time since, but even with vacumm packing bags from Lakeland, we just couldn't squish it in the car!
GO TO YOUR NEAREST JOHNSTONES PAINTS STOCKIST AND BUY THEIR TARPS, WE HAVE 1 EVERY YEAR FOR CAMPING, APPROX 6M BY 3M AND IT COMES WITH RINGLETS ALL THE WHY ROUND IDEAL FOR PUTTING PEGS THRU, THEY COST ABOUT £7 AND COMES FOLDED FLAT AS A PANCAKE

Good idea, will try out next weekend. Have moved on from blue trap - it was bought for a fiver years and years ago but is now relegated to keeping car clean when taking stuff to the dump.
Have gone mad & splashed out 18 of our English pounds on Ebay on a green monopole tarp which will get it's first airing on Friday.
I can't wait, me.

I use a tarp to give the dogs a daytime shade if i am lazing.or at the showers Else use it lengthways a a temp wind break.. I got mine from a place called "In Excess" nearby & they had camoflage pattern at the same price. They sell end of stock items, a lot of towns have this type of shop.
