Firstly, have you ever been/would you go camping with a child on antibiotics? My 3 year old has had a cough since monday, we thought it was just a simple cold at first and hoped she would be better by the time we go (friday morning), but today i had to take her to the docs and they have given her a course of antibiotics. She isn't unwell in herself, just suffering a little at night with the coughing.

Secondly, has anyone ever tried putting one airbed on top of another, or would it just be too bouncy? we have two double airbeds, having just bought the kids camp beds we now have a spare and wondered if it might be more comfortable to lie on two?

Two answers:

Answer 1: I would take her!  The fresh air will do her good! Just keep her warm!

Answer 2:  I don't think there will be enough support - I wouldn't do it! (although, to be honest, I'm a thermarest man!)

If she has a chest infection ...and I think she must do, as doctors don't hand out antibiotics willy nilly these days...then a cold damp atmosphere isn't going to do her chest any good at all. And lets face it the chances of getting a warm dry weekend in April in the UK is vanishingly slim! Chest infections can very easily develop into pneumonia if given the wrong set of circumstances. I might chance it with a big child of 10 or 12, but not with a 3 year old.

I've tried the two airbed trick and what seems to happen is that the edges get extra wobbly and easy to roll off...ouch!

Although I say I wouldnt miss a camping trip for the world I agree with Val & think a chest infection is too risky for a little 'un at Easter. Theres still ground frost some mornings and it just isnt worth it.

My eldest was ill in a similar way when she was just 2. I was lucky enough that my mum stepped in to babysit whilst I went away for the weekend. I missed her like mad and came home a day early but I really appreciated what my mum did for me. Have you got any relatives that might step in so you wouldnt have to cancel?

dpends how groggy she feels with it. If the infection is making her feel ill then she wont enjoy her trip at all. I totally agree with Val, not worth making her worse if it is a chest infection and if you're all close together in a warm dampish tent then chances ae she's going to infect the rest of you!!

If it's an ear or throeat infection then see how she feels but be prepared to pack up sharpish. And it might be a good idea to find out where the nearest doctors/walk in surgery is before you set off

Thanks for your replies, I am still undecided as to what we should do. This is our first trip of the year and we have hubby's sister and her kids, MIL and her fella and hubby's cousin coming with us, they have only been once before and that wasn't a good trip so if we don't go then they won't.

I couldn't leave her with anyone, even if there was someone to leave her with, I just know she wouldn't settle and i'd fret all weekend.

She is fine in herself, eating well and her usual mischevious self, and i tohught we could always put her in with us at night to make sure she is alright. We are only going 45 mintues away for 2 nights, so can be home in hardly any time at all if needs be. I am waiting for hubby to get home from work to see what he thinks.

One thought...did you ask the doctor for his opinion on her going camping?

I wasn't suggesting you left her with anyone, btw. But your OH and other kids could go and you could join them for the day(s) if the weather was good.

I did mention to the doctor that we were camping this weekend and she didn't say anything.

It was another poster who suggested that I may be able to leave her with a relative as she had left her daughter with her own mother on one occasion. I also wouldn't be able to join them during the daytime as I don't drive.

As yet we are still undecided, and are going to play it by ear and maybe leave later on friday afternoon instead so that we can see how she is beforehand.

Does she enjoy camping? Does she LOVE camping?  Is she actually keeping well in all other aspects bar the cough? 

If the answer to all 3 is yes, then GO!!!

You will be close enough to home it's not a disaster if you need to nip back.

Let's face it, everyone loves a wee holiday, kids too - it may be just the boost she needs!!

Hi there Rubymam, We have just returned from a weeks holiday with our grandaughter who was sick due to the MMR and pneamonia jab, she contracted measles, we visted the GP twice on holiday and although the GP was lovely and reassuring, as this was viral there was nothing they could do, we had a great time anyway. If your daughter has a bacterial infection the antibiotics will pick it up, if it is a virus they will not and you will have to sit it out no matter where you are.

I hope you have a great time this weekend no matter what you decide.

my lad been plagued wih croup splutters all over at home in summer never had any probs taking him use your 6th sense you know if there really ill and only you can decide if your near a town city go for it.
