I can't believe it. The ABS system is flashing and the display shows an icon with a car swerving. what on earth does this mean? I'm all packed and ready to go. I am heartbroken. Hubby is coming back from work to see if he can sort me out. All my dreams disintegrating............
Nightmare - that's got to be everyone's fear - being all packed up and ready to go then something happening.
Hope your OH can sort it out otherwise, hope you have breakdown cover. We do, primarily because we also tow and wouldn't risk breaking down with the 'van in tow and not having access to another tow vehicle to get it and the car to safety.
At least the car alerted you to the problem whilst you were safely at home, not doing 70 along the motorway!
Fingers crossed for you that you can get it fixed quickly and still get away.

What does it say in the handbook? My car handbook has a section on "What this flashing light means". I've sorted out quite a few problems myself (I have only a hazy idea of car mechanics) from reading the handbook.
Hi there,it probely means there is a vault with your abs how does it feel does it happen alot or first time?ring your local garage and ask them what the problem is explain you are on your way away so they simply dont just get a job from you sometimes these things can be just switched out with the right combo or tool.
The ABS is to do with your brakes, So if you had to do an emgency stop a car would normaly lock up and skid but with ABS it prevents the car skidding, and gives you a more control and coming to a steady stop.
Mine dont flash but stays on and i been driving it about like it for ages, dont affect my car just i no that if i do have to brake hard it probbaly mean it will skid so i am ready for it and taking my time.
I'm a mechanics wife so i have picked up a little bit of knowledge.
Often the ABS light is on when there is actually nothing wrong with the brakes, it's either a front or back sensor at fault. The only way to find out is to take it to a garage that has the proper diagnostic machine. The back sensors are quite easy and cheap to replace , the back more difficult and more expensive. Or that could be the other way round. Or that could just be our car.
We have actually recently had the same problem, nothing wrong with the brakes just a faulty sensor. Safe to drive but it won't pass an MOT like that.
The only way to find exactly what the problem is , is to take it to the garage and get it plugged into a machine. Around here that costs about £30 but unless you can repair it yourself it's going to work out expensive.
But we have to remember ABS is an add-on to a lot of cars, and the majority of people drive around quite happily without it.
I've got mixed views on ABS anyway, because they can actually increase the braking distance. We are told that it allows you to drive round an obstacle whilst braking heavily, but I'm pretty certain I'd not remember I could steer whilst doing an emergency stop.
Braking heavily and steering with a caravan on the back worries me even more.
Is this the 1st time you have loaded your car like this ? If the car has self leveling suspension (and quite a few modern cars do) it can trigger the ABS, drive the car a short distance and see what happens if this is the case. The other thing worth checking if the car is loaded up is the brake fluid level as if the car is not sitting level due to the extra weight in the back and the fluid level was low in the 1st place this would be enough to triger the brake fluid level indicator, If this is the case it may well be that you have simply worn the brake pads low and the fluid has been displaced to compensate but its worth getting it checked.
Good luck.

This is probably a failure of the ABS sensor. If soyou can drive but the ABS braking may/may not work. Depends whether it's the sensor acting up or a genuine fault is showing and the sensor itself is ok.
a car broke down in front of our drive the other day, good friday. It stayed there all over easter. The garage came to pick it up at 5.45 pm on tuesday. We were not going camping luckily, but just knowing that if we had planned on going camping,we would have been unable to because our drive was blocked, brings me out in a cold sweat I do sympathize with you,as the people whos car broke down were young, and it probably destroyed their entire easter,in regards to getting away.
