1) Assembling the poles correctly ie pushing the sections completely into the ferrules.
2) Placing the poles correctly on the ring and pin connectors.
3) Having your inside helper lift the weight of the tent when you first lift the dome poles into place.
4) Only putting the flysheet over the inner after you've assembled the inner poles fully.
5) Connecting up any ties that hold the flysheet to the inner.
6) Guying out fully and correctly.
7) Treating your poles gently ie not tipping the bag out onto hard ground, not putting things on top of them in the car, not throwing them around.
Bottom line though is that poles do split and it's worth checking them for easly signs of this each time you take the tent down. Look for white streaks and hairline fractures that you can only detect with a fingernail. Always carry spare sections and replace damaged ones asap as using one damaged section puts additional stress on the others.The most usual times to break poles is during erection and striking of a tent. Or in high winds, of course.
