We don't take a washing up bowl, just a small blue Ikea bag - costs about 15 pence and has handles. So far it has been watertight but is so cheap it doesn't matter if it needs replacing at the end of each trip.
Just need to work on some more space saving ideas so we don't need to buy a trailer!
On the first visit to the nearest supermarket I try to get hold of some cardboard boxes.
Stood on their side and pegged one on top of the other these become our shelving for clothes, books, ipods, cameras etc.
I also break one up 'til I have an unfolded piece of cardboard and use it as a wind break around the stove, held in place by large stones or filled 1.5L water bottles.
We used boxes last year, however this year we 'invested' in some very cheap cool bags (from pound shop) and we have split things up, pots & pans in one plates etc in another, electrical stuff in another, we have found this easier to fit things in rather than big boxes.
We do that. It's easy to write on the (white) Tesco ones with permanent marker, so we know what's in which bag, but on the darker colour ones (M&S ones, bought at end of season when they were going for a song) we fasten some white tape (electrician's) around the handle to make a luggage label, then write on that in permanent marker.

I have got really P------ off with spending days packing and unpacking (my tent is still in the car from Easter I think I will just leave it there till B Hols.) so this time I have decided to travel light I have bought two sets of plastic drawers sold in most supermarkets and Wilkos and am going to pack as much as I can in them clothes kitchen things etc. and wheel them out to the car then just transfer them ready packed into the tent. Anything that will not go in the drawers I will question do I really ned it. But then I just have me to pack for.
We do that too, footso, now stuff stays in the drawers, which are lifted straight into the kitchen tent. Saves time, and stress!

We have a square one with handles and it seems to fit in better than a round one and it is always full of stuff
I agree. We have a large oblong one with handles, bought in France a few years ago. It's easier to stow than a small one, because lots of other stuff stacks easily inside it.
I used to take a tub trug for the washing up but got fed up with it as mine was too big.Now i use a mop bucket, just take the wringer part off.Its oval so it holds my larger enamel plates and with the handle i can carry it easily.
We use the zip up bedding bags from Ikea very large bags with handle, i think they are for bedding but ideal to store camping equipment at home too!!! cost about 1.40p

I wish I could get a blow up toilet - piggin thing is always the one thing I think 'ugh where is that going to fit in the car/trailer!?'
Might sound silly (or insulting?) but have you ever thought about transporting your loo in two pieces?, We put each half behind a seat in the car, it takes up a lot less room than if you transported it "whole" - just a suggestion...

now that is a brilliant idea!!
My sister has a portaloo but doesn't take it because of the room it takes up in the car, i will be telling her about splitting it up to transport it . Thanks .
wow, this is a really good thread, some usefull ideas. My husband is VERY good at camping packing.....strategically slotting thinkgs in the boot like a jigsaw puzzle lol. We fold fleece blankets and towels up and the kids sit on them in the car. We put all our kitchen items into the washing up bowl inside a collapsable crate (tesco) so the washing up bowl takes up no extra room and the stuff can 'spill over' into the crate. We then use the crate for storage of large items like cans and big bottles of drink etc.
We dumped our water carrier on our first camping trip. We now buy a large bottle of water (the kind with a handle) from the supermarket during our shop after we have pitched.......no nasty tastes, refillable and disposable at end of holiday!
For our clothes we have a large clear zip up storage bag from ikea.
The huge zip up bags from Ikea are brilliant. I bought 2 last year and put all our bedding (for 5 of us)- sleeping bags, pillows, pillow cases and blankets in them - they squash really well into the trailer. I seem to remember fitting in my towels too!
I bought a couple of vac bags from Dunelm - fantastic. All bedding (including the airbed itself) and towels for 2 of us go into one bag and clothing in the other. I suck the air out with the vacuum at home, then use the air bed pump when we pack up on site. Best thing I ever bought. Can't believe how much more space we have in the car........of course I still manage to fill that with something else.........
we split the porta potti and store the loo rolls in the loo bowl!
Used to take a small box with lid for washing up and stored 2 fold flat water acrriers in it with th tea towel, washing up liquid and sponge but now we don't bother taking it, we just carry the pots to the wash-up point. The water carriers fit in the side pockets in the car door.
The zip up bags from ikea are just big enough for the bedding to go in and then lays flat in the roof box which is fab.
We take 2 STurdy boxes with lids - one for cooking stuff and one with food.drinks etc. They are tall and slim so they sit neatly on the back seat and still leave room, and when we get to teh tent they double as table tops.
We also take a folding bucket, folding dog bowls etc. These fit neatly into the car glove box!
