We pretty much leave everything in the tent and put the valuables locked up in the car.

A friend of ours once asked why we didn't buy a lock for the zips on our tent. Good Idea I said, but if someone wants to get in all they need is a knife!

I'm new to this camping lark - all help and advice, no matter how obvious it may seem, is greatly appreciated!

Keep all valuables with you at all times - we even take them into the sleeping pods with us at night too - won't chance leaving locked in car.  Otherwise just zip up and go.  Have a great time.

As said we keep valuables (mobile, cameras etc.) with us anyway or we lock them in the boot of the car, we're trained for motorsport venues so we are overly cautious but I still think it's better to be safe than sorry.

More importantly though is to make sure your tent is secure and safe from the weather whilst you are gone, make sure you've used all the guys properly, make sure water isn't going to pool anywhere because something isn't tensioned properly and make sure all your pegs are in properly. If the weather is nasty you've got much more chance of suffering tent damage than having things stolen.

Just be sensible, and take your valuables with you.    Odds are things like mobile phones and cameras are going to be with you anyway.
The rest of the stuff just leave on site/
The only thing that we ever do is put things like chairs inside the tent - simply because that way they will stay dry if it rains/

The best security on any campsite are your fellow campers. Be friendly towards them and you can be pretty sure they'll keep an eye on your tent. In return, you'll be expected to keep an eye on theirs for them. We once went out shopping while waiting for our daughter and her man to arrive at one site. They arrived earlier than expected and were virtually being held hostage by our neighbours.

I agree, don't leave anything of value in your tent, pack away any chairs or things that might get wet or blow away and zip up your tent so that it's as secure as it can be. That way any stray wind or rain won't do any damage.

I've always been careful to keep phone/purse/keys with me but everything else has always been safe in tent and that's over years of camping. It's common sense to close curtains of tent while you're out and about to stop opportunists though. Hope I haven't tempted fate now though!

It us a truth universally acknowledged that camping is fun.

I rarely leave anything out overnight, I'm always worried about things getting blown over and either getting damaged or causing damage to tents.

Yes, and often it is not undercover, just surrounded by a windbreak. Obviously we don't leave anything out that rain would ruin, and we tend to site our kitchen against the hedge/trees or at the back of our tent.

Never had anything pinched or ruined yet [crosses fingers].

Yes, I just zip up the utility tent, more against the weather than anything else. But it is set up ready for a cuppa first thing in the morning!
