I must have spent days trawling through the amazing advice on this site and still can't make up my mind what to buy.

We are a family of 5 with 2 dogs - so I have taken on board the advice to upsize the tent. The tent will spend at least 2 weeks every year pitched on the very north coast of Scotland as well as the odd weekend jaunt to Lake District etc.

I have come down to the choice between the Khyam Ontario 8 and the Vango Tigris 800. The midge proofing (if that's possible) will be essential, as well as being able to stand up to whatever the weather throws at us:  wind, rain (and hopefully some sun). Ease of pitching is key as we have the 3 smalls and dogs to entertain during this time ( and a husband who is not quite as sold on the camping thing as me). I am pretty budget conscious too, but want to be sure I buy decent quality.

Can anyone advise me if I am on the right track -   or if there is any other tent that maybe fits the bill better? I am hoping to see these tents next week.

Thank you!

We have the Khyam Indiana 8 but friends have just bought the Gelert Horizon 8 with sig and I must say I'm very envious !!!! can't comment on whether it'll hold up to the North Coast of Scotland though.  We just keep buying, thats the problem - OH text today to say he'd bought an Outwell Colorado 5 so that now makes 4 tents we have!!!!   As for the midges by yourself some Avon Skin so Soft dry oil spray (green bottle) and that keeps the midges at bay (from you / not the tent).  Hope you make the right decision.

Out of the two you mention I would personally go with the Khyam - just from owning one.

We have a Sun Valley 8 but it's discontinued this year by Outwell.

Have you read the upload your tent pics thread?? There are a few 8 berths pictured on there. There's one almost identical to the SV8 I think it's Beefysmum who got it. It's a Sunncamp one I think.

Hi there and welcome to the site!

you seem to have done your homework and narrowed it down to 2 good tents. I would say a tunnel is the right way to go, I'm a big fan of tunnels, lots of space, easy to pitch and no problems with tent size at some sites. I know there are others out there who will disagree but thats just what I think.

When we got a new tent last season like you it came down to Khyam or Vango. We opted for Vango, we felt that the build quality was better on the Vango over the Kyham.

Whatever you choose I hope you all enjoy you trip/s and be mindful that it could be the camping bug that bites as well as the midges!

have you thought of aroyal vegas

course im biased as thats what ive got

new this year for me

was on special offer at home counties in shepperton  £199

brilliant tent

8 berth

3or 4 bedrooms

and zipped ground sheet

easy to put up me and my 10 year old manage it on our own

if windy one of the little ones helps

the bedrooms are two doubles and the third can be split with a curtain..so that when my OH doesn,t come all of us  ( i have three kids )we canall sleep in same room with loads of room to spare

the living space is enormous..which is where my dog sleeps in his crate

and there is a bonus of a small porch for wet shoes dog bowls etc

i got it because last year our tent had to be packed away wet and when we got home it took me two weeks of draping it accross the house to dry that wasnt the only reason i also wanted a fitted porch area and a zipped ground sheet

with the zip in ground sheet easy to cope with drying

I'm going to throw this in:
Have you considered the Amazon 800? Steel poles so should stand up to the weather.
