We fancy camping in the Bridgenorth area so start searching, I love this site for that purpose.
I find what looks to be the perfect site for us, Stanmore Hall. I go to the booking form and see.....................

Tents, maximum width 4m including guylines agghhh!!!
We have a 7 birth 3 bedroom Outwell Georgia XL with extension.
However they do allow Caravans with awning and car.
They also allow motorhomes maximum length 9m.
http://www.morrisleisure.com/bookingform.asp?intsite=1

How can a familly tent with car be bigger than caravan with awning and car.

It's starting to become anoying now(is it just me), after all we do pay as much if not more than caravanc and motorhomes and we don't require hardstandings.

Rant over.......

I know the feeling,I booked a pitch recently at a haven site in tenby, before we'd bought our tent, they have now stated that if our tent is longer than 21foot then we will have to pay £50 extra.our outwell indiana is only just over this but we cant risk it as after travelling all that way we would be gutted if it didnt fit onto the pitch and we couldn't get another one!!!

I,m beginning to wonder whether we have done the right thing by buying such a large tent.are we going to have this problem everywhere we go???

It's not just me then

I'm thinking of selling the house and buying a whopping great big motorhome with sides that extend out and whopping satelite dish.

I'll be fine at any campsite then

Some tents have got very big and they do cause a problem for some sites with marked pitches, a caravan and an awning may look big but when you think a 5 berth van is probably about 2.5 mts wide it is not really that big, and the biggest motor home would still have to be below a certain maximum width to travel on the uk roads

I agree when you add an awning it can double the size of the van but it is still going to be under the size of some of the big tents that you get now

If you want to use EHU then that normally means that you need to use a marked pitch so you have to conform to site size restrictions, there are plenty of sites that will accommodate large tents but you will be limited in your choice

Check out the thread on here for campsites that are accepting big tents. The list is growing all the time. Our Vermont xl is 4.8m wide, but have booked four days at whitsun and two weeks summer hols no problem. If the pitches are that small at your chosen campsite I'd find another. I hate being squeezed in, it's not relaxing at all.

we too have a georgia xl which had it's first trip out may bank hols.  we stayed at Charity Farm in lancashire,  The owners were fantastic, i rang first and told him the dimensions and after laughing about it being twice the width of a caravan, we agreed on £3 per night supplement.in order for me to secure a corner plot which would allow more room for pitching.

good luck in your search and keep us posted of other sites that you find that are good about larger sized tents.

I have to admit - the tent being able to fit on a single pitch and still afford maximum living space was one of the 'must have' criteria when we purchased ours!

Camping, (in MHO), is not what is used to be when I was a lad and i'm only 45!

It's a case of us, (tents) and them (caravans and motor homes) and having owned a tourer, I reckon land owners are more in favour of caravans and tourers simply because of the standard shape and size of a pitch because they can fit more on and maximise their income by having neat rows of caravans and motor homes!

I know, lets blame the tent designers, haha!!

The maximum legal width of a caravan in the UK is 2.5metres so even with a 3 metre awning it would only be 5.5 metres in width, nearly 1.5m narrower than the Georgia and of course a tent needs guy ropes on all sides of it unlike a caravan and awning which makes the space required for the tent greater again.

The problem with spread domes is that they are inefficient, you have less space in them than the equivalent tunnel or frame shape tent because of the dead space between the pods and that's without taking into account the sloping pods. I worked it out once what the internal space was in a similar tent compared to a regular shaped tent and the regular shape gives more space for less footprint.

Hi we go to kiln park Tenby a lot and have never paid any extra .This year  i have booked for the last week in May and when i booked the girl on the phone ask me twice if our tent is under 21 feet ,which it is,as we have got a new tent this year.I wouldn't worry about whether your tent will fit on a pitch here (Melvinb) ,not unless you need electric hook up then you may struggle.it is one big field and you can pitch anywere you want,to be honest it is a family site and you will see lots and lots  of big tents

Hi we stayed at a site in tenby just recently with our poddy dome tent and had no extras to pay (apart from the EHU) site name I forget but it is on my profile.

I think the main problem is the shape of some of the very large tents Y or X shape which actually have a very large footprint. The widest caravan is likely to be 2.4m you can get 3m wide awnings and a caravan is unlikely to be more than 8m long therefore the max possible size will be about 5.5m x 8m and this will be a nice rectangle shape. Some tents are considerably bigger than this and wierd shapes.
