I know this is a bit like how long is a piece of string but if we were cooking one main meal a day and a few cups of tea how many days would

4.5kg butane

or

3.9kg propane

last?

my 2.75kg has had 2 weeks already and plenty left guess 8 weeks worth used as you would use it.

We camp about 3 weeks a year, cooking a meal everyday, sometimes breakfast and numerous cups of coffee. We have to change the gas approx every 2nd year, so approx 6 weeks usage.

                     I run two campingaz 904's I think they are 1.8kg when in France, that way you never run out of gas, for UK I am looking at getting a BP GasLite bottle, at 5kg will last ages, and as the bottle has a transparent window, you can see how much gas is inside, and the BP is around £16 for a refill, and the 904 is £18, no brainer really for UK use.

You will find that all stoves will give a gas comsumption number.

I have always found that most burners on average will consume 100g an hour so all you need to do is work it out.

4.5kg on one burner = 45 hours

3.9 on one burner = 39 hours

grill will take about same as top burner. I always say to customers that you never cook for more the 20 mins so using a double burner and grill on a 4.5kg will give you 15 hours cooking and 45 meals at 20 mins each.

Thanks for the reminder - i need to replace my gas, running on fumes atm.

I think the above estimate of 6 weeks from a 4.5 butane is a good one and as a rule of thumb I think about getting a refil once a year ish.

Of course all depends on useage and how brave you are - I let mine go fairly low due to forgetfulness and stupidity!

Is it worth getting one of those gas level indicators , the magnetic type that stick on the side of your bottle..?  

 I know its probably obvious but I have in the past been refused a refill because the bottle wasnt completely empty, despite me doing the shake test etc. It actually had about 2 hours worth of gas left in it !!.  I have never run out yet but still aren't 100% sure on this one!

How do you do a shake test??

Obviously I shake it but how can I tell how much gas is left?

I'm not much of a cook on holidays and I've worked out ours is a 907 and has lasted 4 years so far, but don't want to run out during the middle of this years camping trip as were in the middle of nowhere.

We don't worry about our camping gaz 907 running out when camping as we have a suitcase burner as well and refills are commonly available locally just about wherever you go. Of course it is annoying if it runs out mid meal rather than just boiling a kettle!
