Have you considered a head torch for the reading aspect. Also comes in very handy for a lot of other applications. They are very cheap these days. Just a thought.

Fairfriend here is a pic of a UFO lamp. I think it`s what people mean. Click on the pic.

Martin.

If your looking for bright white light, go for the PLS Awning light, 1.2m in length gives of the same light as a 75watt regular light bulb, due to the 150 Super Bright LED's, can run of EHU or 12Volt (mod req), although for that retro light look I do prefer my 1952 Bialaddin X320 Pressure (paraffin) lamp, nice but not very practical in this day and age, due to heat output and messing with meths, mantels and lighter etc, although it does give a super 60watt true light output, as for the PLS try Camperlands or Waudbys, around £25 but defo worth it.

Coleman dual fuel twin mantle, easy to light & very bright down to warm glow, one refill lasts a few nights.

How about a rechargeable led vehicle inspection type lamp . My friend took one with him last year when he joined us and was most impressed.Still can't beat head torches though IMO.

Hi Spudz.

Just realised I made a typo, my lamp is a 300X of course, they were not making the Vapalux 320 back in 1952!, I am still contemplating taking the lamp to France with me, I know it can be a faff, compared to using some LED whiz bang device, but there is somthing so special about all that hissing of the pressure, and the glow of the mantel, that a modern day lamp can never give, what should I do?.

The light and heat from the std camping gaz 206 lantern is hard to match, plus that loverly sound.  The heat is very useful for the those chilly evenings. Would never be without one.

Head torch for me every time. It puts the light where you want it, ie right where you're looking, and leaves your hands free.

They are the best thing for reading by imo. We use an adaptable torch/lantern thing for ambient light.
