OK, I've been putting off posting this but hubby said 'can't you put something onto that forum you're always tapping away on' so I give in, here goes..

He wants to know if anyone out there has successfully managed to cook pizza when camping. I mean supermarket bought ones here, not talking making the dough and going the whole hog or anything, but either fresh or frozen supermarket ones. For some reason he has a desparate longing to eat pizza when camping.. dunno, don't ask! Anyway, we can't afford to buy pizza from the take aways on sites!

Thoughts so far are, heat them through on a large frying pan then put them under the grill and move them around a lot (we're talking campingaz two burner with tiny grill here!). Or, put them on the barbecue (!?) or, put them into the portable gas bbq and put the lid on (never been sure if you're actually supposed to cook with the lid on with one of those, anyone know?). Other thought was to take the George Foreman grill, put a couple of silicone sheets in it and slide the pizza in between - you'd probably have to turn it around a lot and it would probably look rather odd...) Any further suggestions? We don't want to buy one of those camping ovens - they look far too dangerous, and anyway I don't want to spend any more money - and it's hardly saving us money that way is it!!?

All suggestions gratefully recieved!

In a magazine I have from last year Jamie Oliver did a recipe for BBQing pizza fron scratch but basically once ready he brushes the bbq bars with oil, puts the pizzas onto the bbq covers with the lid and cooks for 5 mins (he had already precooked the base slightly on the bbq first so this would affect your cooking time). This recipe was for both a gas or charcoal bbq.

I did one wrapped in foil on the barbecue, the base was a bit burnt though, may be better to put it in alarge frying pan in foil first to get it hot, then take it out of frying pan and then onto bbq to crisp the base. This was a bucket bbq with no shelf height adjustment, so it may work better on a regular bbq on a higher shelf to stop base burning.

We have cooked pizza on the cadac and it works great just put the lid on and on high heat for about 5 mins just keep an eye on the base so you do not burn it .the first one we did was a bit black ,but we have the hang of it now

We have a Cobb which does an ok job, the trick is to get the base cooking at the same time as the topping, I have some unglazed terracotta tiles that I use for cooking Pizza in a conventional oven that I would imagine if you heat a tile on a BBQ until it is very hot put the pizza on it cover it cook until the base has cooked most of the way through and finish off under the grill to brown and cook the toppings. Unglazed tiles have to be used and some glazing contains lead which can be harmful, you can buy a proper pizza stone but they can be expensive and I have found the tiles do an excellent job, the tile or stone evenly distributes the heat through the base. Beware though once hot they stay hot for ages.

we do pizza on the bar b q. We create an open fronted oven using a large sheet of tin foil domed over the top of the barbie. The pizza sits on a pizza tray and we often place extra layers of tin foil under the tray to prevent the base burning before the top is cooked. But it does cook fine as the heat rises up the sides of the barbie and is trapped by the tin foil dome and therefore cooks the top of the pizza. It works best if you don't have too hot a barbie going, or damp down the barbie by placing new cold coals on top of the hot ones. It temporarily knocks back the heat if the base is cooking quicker than the top. Keep a close eye on it turning lots to ensure even cooking and then enjoy!

I've seen a Tristar 10 litre electric oven, it takes 9 inch pizzas, and it's £29.99.

It's on the bridgend , leisure and camping website. Hope this helps.

A Remoska is what you need! You will need a EHU though.  Can't recommend highly enough.  Lakeland sells them.  If you search on here you should find quite a few threads for more info.

How about get pizza bases, tomato paste, cheese and toppings

Cook base under grill on one side turn over grill on the other side top with tomato paste and cheese and pop back under and grill till cheese melts

use toppings that are pre cooked i.e. sandwich ham, fried onions put them under the cheese so they don't burn.

I have though long and hard on this for many, many weeks as I and the kids miss pizza too but we try and keep the cost of camping down so no take-aways for us

If your bbq has a lid you can turn it into an oven.Once coals are ready 20-30 mins, divide the coals to each side of the grill and cook the pizza with vents open and lid on. Hopefully you wont have a burnt pizza this way, as it's not actually over the coals. I cooked a chicken this way at the weekend, it was fab and not at all burnt
