I dont think its ever a good idea to skimp on certain parts of camping. Your tent being one of them.
If (when) the weather turns nasty then somewhere warm and water tight to hang out in, with room to move and maybe get a pal or two in aswell just so its a bit more cheerful is a must imho and can change bad weather from being a holiday spoiler into a mere inconvenience. I imagine that people with children need this even more so, wet cold bored children cooped up together in a small space cant be fun?
I wonder if newbies stay camping longer if there first trip is comfortable and wrestling with a tent which is a struggle to get up and down, due to size and lack of experience would surely add to discomfort almost as much as not having enough room - mid range for beginners would be my advice.
