Have just tried to book a pitch for our Vango Oregon 800 at Roseview campsite in Oban, only to be told they don't take tents that large. I noticed another site in the Highlands only took up to 6 man tents. Is this likely to be a common problem as we only bought it last year?!
It depends on the site. Some commercial sites have large pitches - they all seem to take big caravans & motorhomes. The club sites are generally large with plenty of space so they may be a better alternative, though they do have the six metre rule - that is to say 6 metres between your unit & the next all the way around. You could always ask for 2 pitches next to each other, the site would then want 2 lots of money.
How big is your tent by the way? Is it not more to do with the total size of the outfit rather then necessarily berths? We have an Oceane 315GL trailer tent which is 8m X 4m with awning and sun canopy, that is pretty big but have had no problems at sites so far.
It's 680cm x 280cm, tunnel type so not as big as some tents with extra "pods" off. Camp site owner didn't seem to want to discuss type of tent when I tried, like you I thought that the no of berth's isn't necessarily a guide to size .
Sounds strange to me, this is a good meter smaller than mine on each side. Must just have small pitches. I am sure Caravan and Camping club will allow tents up to 9m x 5m on their sites - there is one in Oban called Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Barcaldine by Connel, Argyll and my folks have stayed their and liked it.
This shouldn't be an issue in the Highlands, honest we do have normal roads and are not all single track ;-)
There should be plenty good sites near Oban, Glencoe and further up towards Fort William etc - Aviemore is always a good place to visit and Inverness is great.
Sounds like we may just have been unlucky with our choice of site - just panicked a bit that we wouldn't get in anywhere! Have now got 6 nights booked at Camusdarach near Morar so just deciding which direction to go in from there.
That's a good point Neil - we always phone campsites rather than using web site, always best to check beforehand. Usually find people are interested in your travels and outfit etc and it always pays to talk to a human.
some tents are missive..I went to tent show recently and some are ENORMOUS!! Sites sometimes prefer tunnel type tents as they are a neater "footprint" ...like a caravan. i think you really need to post in tents section for this discussion. We have had problems on some sites with our vango diablo 900 which is on the large size...never realised sites would be picky on size when we bought it but can normally find a site to pitch it on. Try this link for sites accepting larger tents http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=4&TopicID=27296&PagePosition=1

I've got a wife and three kids so obviously need a bigger tent than a regular four person job. On many sites we pay per person so are already paying more anyway. Are you saying I should pay more again?
I agree that it does seem unfair that we with a large 6 berth caravan and awning are accepted on most sites without a problem but tents with a smaller footprint are not. I don't know if i am paying more than a tent in the 1st place but as there are many caravanner's out there i very much doubt if we are paying for 2 pitches otherwise we'd be in tents too.
Before we got a caravan we had a tt that was very old and beyond repair so we looked into buying a tent but couldn't find one that would fit on a pitch at the size we would need.
You've found that sites will and do accept you tent, which imo is not large by today's standard of tent, so you just have to look around more and spend your money with site's that are happy to take you...
