I am pretty new to this site and camping. My family and I went camping last weekend in Skegness and after a good day out we returned to our tent to find it had been blown down the pole sleave had ripped and 2 of the poles had snapped, we had to pack up and come home (which was very upsetting for my 5 year old) This was only our second time of camping and i now feel a little worried about going again.

My tent is in for repairs at our local camping shop and I have just ordered 20 delta pegs for our next trip. Any advise is welcome. Thanks

was it a light weight or a heavy frame tent? I find the old lichfield frames or cabanons best at staying in winds but yes pitching correctly is a help.sorry to hear the tent is damaged  what make is it?

I think you have taken the correct remedial action . Apart from pitching bum first into the wind , or upgrading to a frame tent , there is little else to do.  I must admit , I would have been reluctant to pitch in some of the winds we experienced last week .

The pegs supplied with tents are normally small skewer pegs which are totally inadequate for guy ropes. You have made the right choice for pegs now, but a selection of pegs are useful, rock pegs are like big nails with a plastic cap and are useful for hard stony ground. We have rock pegs, plastic delta pegs, big plastic pegs  and big v pegs and use what is needed for the conditions.

We have kyham too , just a few trips ourselves -  mostly in windy conditions, although how nice it was not windy when it was raining packing up.

 

It is critical that your guys ropes are 100% - tight, secure and at the correct angles to compensate one another each side - use every guy even if you don't think you need it.  Your next trip will fine, we had a bad incident on our first trip which put a whole in the tent, we learn something new every trip..... have fun...

We pitched last week with our Khyam Ontario 8 and it was fine. And we only used normal pegs, although we will be getting some storm pegs as the tent lifted ever so slightly!!

Hi Koalacarla,

Don't let a bad experience get you down. To become a experienced camper we all at some point had our set backs but we learned from them, as you are.

Use all the guylines and peg the tent nice and taut, even when the weather is very mild; you never know when a hard wind rises but it's apparently always when you're away...
