I saw an estate car on the M25 yesterday, it was loaded up to the roofline with what looked like camping gear.

Not a lot wrong with that, surely.

But as I drew level with the car I realised they'd somehow stuffed a couple of bikes in the back too. The wheels were overhanging the tops of the rear passenger seats, almost touching the backs of the seats in front. BUT they had two kids in the back of the car too.

Now I don't see myself as a contributor to a Nanny State, but surely this is just stupidity? The roads were very busy, and the number of accidents was higher than normal - the closure of the M25 both ways at J23/J24 was testiment to that. So even a relatively simple shunt into the back of the car in front could have done untold damage with bike wheels and kids heads.

I garee. Even when we did have to fill the car quite a bit it was always soft things like pillows and sleeping bags that were placed at the top and never any more forward than the back seats.

I can't believe someone would be so stupid. There are special racks you can buy for bikes so that they can travel safely. Some people really do need a good talking to.

Craziness personified.  Let's all hope they get to and from their destination without incident.  Will they learn?  Probably not.

It drives me crazy seeing folks doing that. A bit of sense is needed when packing the car with gear. The safety of your family is much more important than squeezing in a couple of bikes. I cant believe the stupidity of some folk.

A couple of years back, I was down visiting friends in London. On the drive back up to Glasgow, we got to just outside Preston on the M6 and noticed a really bad accident. As we approached it there was camping gear and luggage, bikes and loads of other things lying along the carriageway. We thought it was a large Van that had crashed, but it wasnt, it was a small family car. It was completely wrecked and the front windscreen had been smashed from the inside - This was the exit point for the camping gear.   I tell you, it was a horrible mess and thankfully the ambulance had been and taken the casualties and the dead away. There was blood everywhere.   Please for the sake of your safety and your families safety DONT overpack your car. If you can live without it then DONT take it. Even with a trailer you can still overpack.

Safety first,everything else second.
You can get bike racks quite cheap,so why put your kids life at risk for a few ££££££'s.

My friends from the next village went away last year to somerset, and stopped at Ikea in bristol on the way home to use their cafe. In the car park they saw an elderly couple trying to squeeze a long carboard box into a small hatchback, it obviously wasn't going to fit. After their coffee they left and headed onto the m4 eastbound. It wasn't long before they spotted a familiar hatchback, old man at the wheel, old lady sitting in the boot with the hatch open, holding onto their protruding cargo....

lol, It's an eye opener at IKEA some times, I once saw a car on the M6 going north, could have been going to the lakes?. Car full of family plus bits and bobs, on two cusions was a 17' open top canoe full of camping gear, tied to front and rear bumper, a loop of thin rope over the canoe and in the car. Just hope he did'nt need to pull up fast

Some people just don;t care.
Take a look outside school, and see how many cars you can spot with four kids in back seat, and a mum with tot on knee in the front.

Because I now have a much smaller car, we had tow bar fitted, and bought a trailer so that I can go camping (without Richard) without overloading the car.

I just can't believe what we see on the road every time we go down to the van.

Safety?  What's that?  Ditto common sense.  Got money for fags and booze though haven't they but when it comes to having the right outfit oh no, skimp on everything.

Ali
