We go away Sat in our Montana 6, tent which has been packed away since last September, it was dry when packed away and has seen stored carefully. I think even so we should get the tent out unroll it and check for any signs of mildew or mould just in case, OH thinks thats crazy. What would you do???

We have the same argument every year before the first camp Fiona. And OH is always the one who says no, and as I can't get into the store room or drag it down two floors it stays where it is until its packed in the car to go away.
And I spend many days and hours worrying over what we're going to find when we get the bag open on site. So far there's never been a problem, but it only has to happen once to be a complete disaster.
If there is any way you can do it without him I'd say get it out and check it over.

You are obviously worried about it, so get it out and check it. If you have put it away bone dry you should have anything to worry about , but theres always a chance. at least if you then find there is mould on it, you can wash the inner tent, to get rid of the mouldy smell .
machine wash , 40 degrees, quick wash cycle, non bio liquid, and a drop of bleach to kill the mould spores. laundrette machine if it won't fit in yours ,or in the bath, but rinse well.
Mould on the outer tent, pitch it wash down with hose, and a new sponge if theres anything to wipe off.
I could never sleep in a musty smelling tent.

I want to get it out but I can't get to it in garage as its on shelf behind some heavy gear and theres no way I could get it back into the bag afterwards - that bit is always a bit tricky with the Monty. Hopefully if I show him this then he'll change his mind and put my mind at rest

Get it out and have a check for any damage. Best to put your mind at rest.

Hi there,
I don't want to worry you further but you say that the tent is stored in the garage. If its not heated and just a normal garage I would get it out to check, not just for damp but also to make sure there is no rodent damage - there are quite a lot of posts about people who have found that their tents have been stored in sheds and garages that have proved irresistable to mice who like to make nice snug homes in them.

Garage is fine we extended last year which included a new insulated internal garage with electric roller doors, so lovely warm & dry, tent on its own shelf & definitely no rodents - in fact thinking about it, it seems a shame to keep just the 2 tents in such lovely conditions!!!! I've persuaded the OH to get it out tonight for a check over - the tent that is!!

I'd say to remove the tent from storage (he said choosing his words carefully) and check it for damage/mildew/nesting mice/bits missing because you left them behind on your last trip/etc. The chances may be remote but you don't want to find out there's a problem when you reach the site.

Well we got it out and its like brand new & that familiar camping smell filled the room. OH says I told you so but I sat there grinning and sniffing tent whilst he rolled his eyes skywards! A day of organising & packing ahead & then off we go Cornwall bound 5am Saturday woo hoo!!!

The weather forecast for this weekend is fantastic so why not pioch in the garden anyway.
