In about 5 hours we will be heading to Billingshurst for our first long weekend in our Gelert Horizon 8

We've had it for a year but this will be the 1st time we have actually camped in it.   Car is all packed with room to spare:

  • folding table
  • director chairs
  • airbeds
  • sleeping bags
  • ready beds x 2
  • camping mats x 8
  • groundsheet
  • camp kitchen
  • cooker
  • water carrier
  • lights
  • heater
  • windbreak
  • gas bottle
  • plates, cutlery etc
  • 12v coolbox

Just gotta put the bags of clothes in and we are ready - all of this in the boot too except the coolbox   ((((((((Mondeo boot))))))))

Hate to sound blonde here.... but what's a fire bucket? Been camping my whole life and never heard of one. Is it a metal bucket you put over a stove to starve it of oxygen?

2011 plans:
April - Exmoor 11 nights
May - Brynawelon, Wales 3 nights
July - Rendlesham Forest 4 nights
Then I am off back home to Australia, where the weather is always perfect for camping :)

Ahhhhh ok.

Nah, we always have a small fire extinguisher in the 4WD, and if having an open fire we've always got a jerry can full of water handy, that has always been enough for us.

I wasn't expecting to see my local twon, I did a double take. Are you going to the Limeburners? I have never stayed there, but spent many, many evenings propping up the bar.

It's the bucket of water you keep outside yout tent in  case you have a fire/your child touches the hot stove/sparks from next doors BBQ land on your tent/the stove ignites/damping down the side of your tent to protect against aforementioned sparks etc. Any old bucket, as long as it holds water. It used to be standard camping practice to do this and it was normal for sites to inist on it. In the event of a fire a dozen or so buckets of water from surrounding tenrs could make the difference between a damaged tent and a major tragedy. I (and a lot of other older campers who grew up learning Ye Olde Secrets of Ye Camping) still do this because when you need that bucket of water, you need it NOW, not after a five minute trip to the tap. And yes, I've used it to put out fires. I set fire to the grass with my gas BBQ one year and I was bloody glad of that bucket, I can tell you.

Also doubles as a dog bowl.

Oh, and I've got a fire blanket in the kitchen box, and a (regularly tested) fire extingusher in the car. Doesn't everyone?

Jerry can of water = fire bucket, surely? As long as it's accessable at all times.

Tis indeed the Limeburners we are heading for, it's Chippie's 60th this weekend as well so a BBQ and party at the pub.  Should make for a great weekend.  I've only camped there once before, but wife pretty much grew up on that site!
