Cant help with a reccomendation on correct(proper) thread to use...But a few years ago I had cause to replace/repair a few of the loops that take the heavy duty elastic bands for pegging out on my porch awning on the van...Did it by hand using ordinary household thread!!

I doubled it through the eye of the needle 2-3 times and ran the thread through a candle a few times to coat it with wax and waterproof the thread..Sewed the loops on and sprayed some left over Fabsil on the canvas area I had sewn.. And never had a problem with warer ingress....Amittedly this was canvas to canvas...But might work in your situation!! If you want to waterproof the thread even further there is a wax for those green thornproof countrywear jackets that you can get(Made by Barbour I beleive) that you can coat onto the thread before using

Got the tip from my fly tying (fishing) days were thread used needs to be waterproofed...Also good for using when replacing/repairing the eyes on fishing rods(covered by a few coats of yacht varnish)
