I know this is quite a big subject to cover but I was just wondering what advice you seasoned campers could give regarding cooking/eating arrangements (or not as the case may be). We've got a week long trip to Three Cliffs Bay in Wales and a short break at Westbrook near Ludlow planned in the near future (both sites highly recommended in the reviews section) and I just wondered about cooking arrangements - is it a no no to take a microwave, should I just manage with my two ring cooker instead? Any hints or tips (or recipes) would be very welcome. Cheers

Many people do indeed take their microwave with them! It is your trip, and you should camp how you wish to camp, so long as you are considerate to others around you & a microwave really should not cause problems for anyone else unless it trips the electrics. I don't know about these things but I wouldn't have thought it would.
I wouldn't take the microwave myself but I find a handy item is one of those small ovens you can buy from Argos for around 15 quid. They are low wattage so unlikely to trip out the electrics and are good for pizza and warming pies and such. Things which a microwave doesn't do very well. If you are spending any length of time on site you may try a firepit and a Dutch Oven. You can do ribs and stews, anything which takes a slow cook. You can even bake bread in them(See ValKScot for details)
As long asthe microwave doesn't trip the electrics, no-one will care a whatever what you cook on. Bear in mind though that many microwaves pull a surge of electricity when they power up, so go for a low rated one.
I personally just manage with a two ringer plus griddle plate for weekends, but if going longer I might take my Party Grill. BTW Safeway I think you might have the wrong Val....I've not got a Dutch Oven, sorry.
We've just bought a CADAC Carri Chef Deluxe and it seems to do most things from the standard BBQ fayre to roast chicken to scones!! Need to get the roasting pan to do the chicken and tried to do so at Go Outdoors, Coatbridge, today but they didn't have it. We did get a non-stick cover for the wok cooking surface - great as we love stir fries.
It's no light-weight item so it definitely not for backpacking(!) but we're hoping it will do all our cooking when camping - it has a flat surface (great for fried eggs, pancakes, etc) the flip side of that is a griddle, there's a BBQ plate, the wok, a pan holder and you can also get a paella pan but it's absolutely enourmous and OH would try to fill it. Fine if there was a crowd of us but it's usually just the two of us!

We have a Cobb, which is great for baked spud etc. I also buy those ready to roast joints in a tin foil dish, and do those. This week I did a gammon, which we had with baked spuds (both done together) and as the Cobb was still so hot, I stuck the chicken joint in afterwoods - had that cold the following day with a couple of packets of pasta in sauce.
Nobody cares if you have microwaved ready meals everyday, or create a gormet meal on a one burner cooker - after all you are on holiday so shouldn't be worrying about preparing the perfectly balanced meat and two veg every single night.
I now take a slow cooker - nice to come in to a hot meal of an evening.
We have lots of BBQs - weather permitting. Sometimes we have chops, steak etc. Other times cheapo beef burgers and sausage.
Plan your menu - allow for days eating out .Then decide the best way to cook . We are flooded with kitchen gadgets . Just keep it simple , you are on holiday!!
we do it on the cheap but very tasty, we make up dinners in advance freeze them and take them down with us in the cool box so we normally have pre frozen curry, chilli and shepards pie for the first few days and then have a few dinners out.
For 5 days or less we have dumped our double burner and grill combi and bought the single burner thats screws down on the camping gaz bottle, getting back to camping basics and better for it.
We are a family of 5 and I use a 2 ring Campingaz hob and a portable gas BBQ, we have fitted a 3 way adaptor which means we can feed both items from the same gas bottle. One rule though, I have a night off cooking and we get a take away, even better if they deliver!
I like the sound of the Cobb, where can I get one?
