The main problem with fitting thicker poles will be that they will not bend the same therefore they will be under greater stress then the standard pole. So just buy spare poles and repair as nessasary.
Remeber its a lightweight portable structure when alls said and done ......
And also remember that the arc of that particular pole sleeve will be designed for a certain weight of pole...putting in a thicker pole might strain the seaming or fixings.
Pole sections do break, unfortunately. Especially during erecting and striking a tent, or during high winds as you found. Leisure tents are not designed for wind speeds of over 30mph, remember, and even at general wind speeds lower than that there can be gusts of much stronger winds. Double guying, double pegging and trying to pitch into shelter will give your poles and tent the best chance of staying upright.
