We had national camping week on last week. whitsun week has been national camping week with camping and caravanning club for a few years now, there was a survey thingy to record how many people camped that week. I think it also coincided with outwells family camping week, when they had special discounts on ?

Yeah the CCC had something going on at Warwick Castle to, was a good little set up with free doggie bags and ice cream

I am aware of the national camping week , but, I was thinking of something to extol to the whole population . The idea is not necessarily that you go to a camp site, that you could go in the garden or other spaces and if you have not got any equipment you could be invited to share a friends set up or something . I would like it as an opportunity on how to enjoy the great outdoors resonsibly , so that we do not have people turning up to campsites and acting in inappropriately . Get children camping on school fields for instance . Sorry ,it is just one of those mad mind farts I have now and again.

I've had a few minutes to crystalise my thoughts , and I think I was really wanting a day that was targeted to none campers to be made aware of the benefits of responsible camping were . The danger of mentioning in the same breath as CCC is that there is still a very middle class association with this fine organisation, and that may alienate those who would benefit most from such a day . Sorry , it reflects my personal views of the importance of community and environmental issues, and in these uncertain times I just would like something honest for people to be involved with.

A friend of mine's son's school had a camp out at their school 2 weekends ago.  They were allowed campfires too.  Thought it sounded like a great idea.

I suggested it for our school Yr 6 leavers and was met with 'oh no, can't do that - the risk assessments and health and safety wouldn't allow it'   !!!

I ask you ..............

That sounds like an excuse to be honest. The Health & Safety Act says that risk assesments should be in place to reduce or eliminate risks as far as reasonably practicable.

Too often Health & Safety is used as an excuse when people are too busy (or can't be bothered)to do the risk assessment properly and put measures in place to deal with any identified risks.

Risk is a part of everyday life, and so is learning to identify risks and how to take measures to handle risk. This is something that our children are becoming less and less able to do because they are never allowed to take reasonable risks in the first place. And that is a REALLY dangerous situation. Too often they grow up into adults with no real appreciation of what is or isn't risky behaviour and that is when tragedies happen.
Or else they see overwhelming risk in every situation and never do anything (perhaps like the school in your case Keely).

Sorry, rant over.

Some sort of celebration of camping would be good fun I think.

Government are on about relaxing things now I think, i.e. allowing conkers again etc etc, kids getting bumps and bruises etc.Would be good17 It's all part of growing up isn't it?!!

Its how we develop as people . My youngest is having a school camp for year 2 in two weeks time on the school field . It is partly why I suggested the idea of a national camping day . I do not want to be thought of as a luddite, but it is important that we have some connection to the fundaments af life . And by that , I really would like the fun put back in to fundamentals.
