Hi all. :)

Have been looking at poles on other tents this weekend just gone and most are fibreglass. My tent has big steel poles on it that are quite heavy.

I was just wondering, does anyone know if you can get fibreglass/composite/lighter poles to replace the ones on my tent? (outwell Indiana 8)

I doubt that you could replace them with fibreglass ones because the shape of the tent is more squared at the roof. The ones with fibreglass poles are more rounded like arches at the roof, and the flysheet is made to accommadate this shape.

Outwell don't make a different choice of poles for the tent.

Wait till you wake up after a night of very strong winds to see lot's of tents with fibreglass poles flattened or drooping one side, or the owners are desperately trying to mend their poles, but your tent is standing as proud as when you pitched it - then you will be pleased that your tent has got metal poles 17

Absolutely agree regarding the advantages of steel poles in high winds!!

What has already been said is so true. The steel poles may be heavier but you will be thankful of them if the wind gets up. Fibreglass poles are great when the weather is fine but having had 2 poles snap on us now its steel or alloy as 1st choice for us. Still got fibreglass poles on our weekend Orchy but we always take extras with us now just in case and you also run the risk of the tent fabric tearing when or if they do go.

I have to say in defence of fibreglass poles - i have an Outwell Hartford XXL which is now 5 years old and it has stood up to everything Cornwall weather has thrown at it1 Gale force winds/Torrential downpours - the lot!  and is still going strong!!!! All its poles are fibreglass.

Honestly, stick with the outwell and it's steel poles. We had your tent and it was perfect to stay upright in VERY heavy wind. We saw a few of the fibreglass poles go bendy and collapse in the same wind.

The tent has a specific shape and you wont be able to replace the steel ones with fibreglass. Also as the tent is designed with the steel poles, it is likely that fibreglass ones wont hold it up!

I agree they can  be pretty  heavy, but soooo worth it when yours is the only one left standing.
