Hi, newish to the forums but found load of valuable advice so thank you! (Esp regarding the Vango Tunnel extention!). We are desperate to pitch our tent for the first time but everytime we plan something the weather lets us down!! As its our first time pitching our new tent (well any tent really!), we are scared to go somewhere this wkend as the weather has been so horrible....oh thinks its will be ok but I feel the ground will be too wet and as we are new to all this we might find it off putting and end up putting the tent on Ebay! Should we just go for it????!!

I'm with you on this as I am new to camping and don't want to be put off by bad weather or wet ground.  But I think ... if you like it when it is wet and cold (ish) then you are going to love it when its sunny.  So unless you have any reason not to, then I'd go for it.

We were going to go this weekend, come rain or shine, but oh has just told me he is working on Sunday.

So last night I planned the weekends when his shift falls so that he is either off on a Mon or a Fri and we are going to be going come rain or shine... HONEST !! 17

I agree with Kazzy, I have 3 kids, 6, 3 and 9 mths and there is no way I am waiting for the school hols to come.  My 6 year old has 100% attendance so I'm not too worried about him missing the odd Fri or Mon between now and the end of July (when the holidays begin) as nice weather is hit and miss in August so we are going to take it when we get it !!  Plus.... the campsites are cheaper before the hols plus you prob won't have to book as they won't be booked up, just ring before you set off... I THINK ANYWAY !!!  LOL.... a little knowlege is a dangerous thing maybe... 17

I would say - check the weather forecast and personally I would not go if it is going to be cold or wet

The fact that you are writing this tells me that you should go on the first sunny/ dry weekend

I am a fair weather camper personally mainly because I have nowhere to dry a big wet tent

Personally, i would just go for it.

It was our first time earlier this year, with two children (10 & 6 )

We set up in the sun, had a varied few days (Wind (high), sun, showers) and packed away in torrential rain :)

If you've got the right gear it shouldnt be a problem, we loved it. (so did the kids)

We hung the tent in the garage when we got home, and it dried fully in five days.

Booked three more trips for this year.

Mike.

Just go for it. You sound  like you really want to pitch your new tent soon. Rain or shine just enjoy every moment. Just bring your wellies & raincoats if the  forecast is bad.17 My first of 5 camping trip last year was stormy so was my 5th & my lovely tent died (well 1 pole snap but my husband put it in the bin as was so dirty) - still it did not put us off camping. We are still going & loving camping, come what may.

I would go for it unless metcheck predicts severe winds

If we all waited for good weather then the campsites would be empty for most of the year and overcrowded when the weather was good

Besides, the weather predictions are rarely accurate

I would suggest going not too far from home for your first trip in case you forget something or are worried, Being close to home will give you some peace of mind.

As for pitching for the first time... dont panic and take your time. It is not a race and never be afraid to ask other campers for help if you need it. Alot of campers will offer to help and if rewarded with a nice cuppa then you have made a new friend.

The first time is always a bit worrying but dont worry about things going wrong as they probably wont.

The first time I persuded OH to try camping, we had a cheap tent, it poured with rain, we woke up with wet feet in the morning and there was not enough height in the tent to stand up. I thought he would never try it again. How wrong was I. We got home, he started looking for a decent tent and we have never looked back.

Take a good book, pack of cards, travel games, puzzle books etc so if you are stuck in the tent for a while at least you will have something to occupy yourselves.

It wont rain constantly and believe me the sound of rain on a tent is absolutely gorgeous :)

Happy camping

Angie

I think we are going to go for it unless theres a storm!!!! We are only going to travel just outside London so its not too far to get back home if we fail miserably!!! It feels like we have been buying everything recommended on the forums so im not worried about lack of kit. My other concern was drying the tent as we dont have too much space but ill worry about that when we come back! Thanks everyone will let you know how it pans out!!!

Go on holiday for goodness sake there's a bloody recession on! I agree with Angelicminx I wouldn't bother if its predicted to blow a gale but any other weather is suitable for tenting. In fact, I actually got my family into the whole idea after a week of rain, rain, rain - they enjoyed themselves so much that they coudn't wait for really good weather on a future trip (and they did get it - it was like taking them to the Maldives for a hundred quid).

Seriously though, if we sat around waiting for great weather all the time we'd never do it, even newbies have to brave the elements, you'll either get through it and plan the next "better" trip or never go again and no regrets.

Have a brilliant trip, we've all had first time nerves, and 2nd, 3rd, 24th etc.

Clare
