We bought a roofbox last year and as everyone says, its great for bedding, pillows and other light but bulky items, you can also access ours from either side which can be quite handy too. We got our roofbox from roofbox.co.uk and our roofbars and feet from go outdoors. We had a people carrier type car then and on the first occasion I was driving in it alone with the roofbox on I accidentially tried to drive into an underground car park, luckily I wasn't going a speed. But I did have to walk back up the ramp asking cars to reverse so I could reverse out, to which they all cracked jokes and I had to smile and carry on. I am always concious of the height whenever we have the roof box on and hubby will never let me live it down either.

You've just answered a question I've been pondering for a few days - can you fit a Halfords box onto Thule bars, so thank you! A friend is giving me her Thule bars but I really can't afford a Thule box. Did you have any problems fitting it - I'm not going to need a conversion kit or anything for the fixings am I? I've got no budget for this at all so I've got to keep costs down as much as possible. Ideally I'd have waited a few more months, but I've had to accept the inevitable - I am not going to get everything I want to take on our next trip without one (unless I leave the dog or the toddler behind 17)

we just got a thule roofbox (440l I think) and we are still struggling to fit everything in. I feel we need a trailer as well but dont want to be limited to 50mph driving through france! Or we need a bigger car but cant really afford it.

The roofbox has given us a lot more space but we mainly fill it with bedding which we now take more of coz we can! We had a limited budget and shopped around so much but then ended up with the Thule as it was so much easier to take on and off than the Halfords. The roofbox company looked good too and has good recommendations.

We have got a roof box ontop of the trailer! It's fab! All the lighter things go in the box (ie, table, chairs windbreak, toys, lamps, airbeds etc) and all the tent, kitchen etc goes in the trailer. Food, beer, wine and clothes goes in the boot of our estate car, along with our newly purchased electric cool box!! It all fits in with lots of room to spare, that way, if i see any bargains whilst i'm away, i can bring them home!! hehe

We also have a bike rack that fits next to the top box on the trailer and a 3 bike holder thingy for the back of the car.

The trailer we bought on offer at halfords last year. Bought the trailer cover and locks off another site on the internet (proper erde ones, didn't get them from halfords as they are really expensive from there) Then a couple of months ago, we bought the erde roof bars from another internet site. The roof box is second hand. The bike rack, which fits on the trailer, was a bargain at £4 from Toys  us sometime ago and we already had the 3 bike rack, from years ago!

Now all i need is the weather, bottle of wine and next month to come a little quicker, as thats when we're off!!!! Can't wait! I'm so happy today too, cos i've just sorted my electric cool box out and just bought my new tent carpet, that should arive next Tues!!!!!! yyiippee!!!!!

Anyway, hope that helps!

love shopping, love a bargain even more!

Moomin76  -

Emma, I have an old roofbox which I am about to take to the tip if I can't find someone who wants it!  It is old but still useable and you are welcome to it if it will help you out till you can get the one you want.  I am based in Oldbury - just off M5 junction 2.
