Hi, just bought a Igloo Max cold, wanted to test it before going away, but unsure what to expect from my test.

I have placed a few refridgerated bottles in with a frozen water bottle and 3 or four ice packs and after about 2 hours the frozen water has already started to melt and also the ice packs. I covered it with tea towels but was only a quarter to a third full.

What do you think, I bought off e-bay and not sure how to tell if it is a Maxcold or not, as it only has the sticker with maxcold on it.

Thanks

Matt

The maxcold ones are a pale blue colour. The bog standard ones are bright blue or red.

The standard ones are of a similar thickness to a standard coolbox - I would expect the maxcold ones to be rather thicker as they seem to be larger for the equivalent volume.

Hi, it's the right colour as on their website but seems to me that the ice is melting quicker than I expected.

Am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks

I doubt it. The ice will melt as it cools the air in the coolbox, and any coolbox will allow some heat in through the sides, no matter how well insulated.

I have no idea how igloo carry out their tests - it could be that they drop a massive lump of ice in their coolbox and see if any's left after 5 days, or they could put ice cubes in and see if any remain (ice cubes will melt faster due to the higher surface area). They may keep the boxes closed for the entire 5 day test.

Hi there. We have a coleman extreme, and find that you need to cool it down for at least 12 hours before use. We fill it as full as possible using milk cartons refilled with water and then frozen. This does start to melt quite quickly, but stays cold enough to get the cool box down to temperature. We then pack it with food ready to go. We usually take a couple of meals frozen in tupperware boxes and use the large flat freezer blocks on top. Last time we used it (May school holiday) we still had frozen juice after 5 days. I do find that it works best when kept fairly full, so we usually buy a bag of ice after 3 or 4 days and fill the by now empty tupperware boxes with it and put them back in the cool box. Works a treat.

Hijacking the post a bit but Nors that's really helpful as we have a yet unused Coleman Extreme to take to France in July, so will be trying out your tips. Thanks for asking the question Buttie!

Your welcome,

I just want to maximise this cool box to try and make it last at least 3 days.

Thanks

As "nors" says, you have to get the cool box down to temperature first and this will involve quite a bit of sacrificial ice. The 5-day claim is valid once the box is down to opperating temperature.

What's more, as the ice melts during this cooling phase you need to drain the melt-water; once you are using it apparently you don't.

I have an IGLOO and it worked satisfactorily for 5 days+.

hi

try filling the cooler up with food and drinks and ice packs leaving little  air space inside the cooler this will preform maximum cold retention

Thanks for the replies,

Former Scout, not sure what you meant about the draining of the water do you or don't you? I have the Maxcold 40 roller version and it doesn't have a drain on it, so that means I would have to pour it out.

Going for 4 nights tomorrow so thanks again I will try some of your suggestions.

Cheers

Drain it when first cooling it down. Leave melt-water in once you've filled it with food-stuff.

I have the 70 roller and it DOES have a plug/drain.

i think you may have aleady gone away, but thought i would reply incase others are interested!

i have a maxcold40 which i got after long research as its quite expensive.

the 5 day test is done in texas in a room that is kept at 90degrees 24 hours a day, they fill the boxes with ice, and the end of the test they are usually then filled with very cold water as the ice has melted but if there is one ice cube remaining it has passed! they kind off cut of their nose to spite their face here as it sounds like a con, but where do you camp that is 90degrees? let alone for 24hours of the day!

i used mine for the first time in may, everything stayed freezing cold for 3 days and the frozen stuff i had put in it didnt thaw!

but as with any cool box you need to think basics, dont leave it open for to long, leave in shade not sunlight or a hot tent, pack it full as spaces fill with warm air,(hence why it didnt work when matt put a couple of things in it) put coldest items at top as cols air falls.

-when i spoke in length to the uk distributer he was really helpful, lots of tips and told me a funny story of a guy who said his marine cold was broken, he had brought the biggest most expensive marine cold- (you can fit a person it it) he put one ice cube in it and it melted within a few hours-, so he called to complain- duh! where do these people come from!

anyway back on focus....

these are american and over there they dont have cool blocks but fill with ice, this works really well and this is fine if you are just using for cans but can be messy if you put things with paper labels etc in,and you are left with a lot of water to yip away, so you really need good quality ice blocks (big & thick) the cheap ones are bad as when they begin to thaw you have a lot of plastic in your coolbox which is slowley raising the temperature, i actually use 2 litre bottles of water frozen as ice blocks (less plastic) then drink it as it thaws! (but my first use in may nothing thawed so had to drink tap water-lol!) in fact it was so good it actually made some spring onions freeze! (they were touching the ice bottles though!)

i love my maxcold roller 40, its great if you use it right, and an extra seat around camp

hope you had a good time with yours! (let me know)

x
