The old adage of the more you take the less you go.
If you didn't use it, dump it except fire prevention first aid kit and tent repairs
Cut down on everything that looked like a good idea at the time but is in fact a waste of time and effort.
You have the gear, you paid for it, don't waste it.
So bare minimum for weekends and get your money's worth out of it.
and yes packing up is the worst time

It's always harder packing up. You're doing it in a hurry, you don't have time to roll/fold/pack kit as neatly as you can do it in the house, it's possibly raining, the kids are around....
Best advice?
1) Don't fill the car up on the way out, whatever combo of boot/roof box/trailer you're using. Leave 10% wiggle room for the return.
2) Spend an hour tidying up the tent the night before. I don't necessarily pack, unless it's something I'm definately not going to be using, but I get the loose rubble back where it should be.
3) Tidy out the car boot the night before, ready to be filled.
4) I personally didn't much like packing with the kids around when they were very small, so I made OH take them out for the morning and did it solo. I'd only phone him to come back when I was ready to drop the tent. Now they're older though they have to help. They can pack their own pods up...sleeping bags, mats, toys etc. And DS is getting taller than me so he's getting trained up to help Hubby with the tent while I pack the car.
