I have recently restarted camping after a lay-off of 17 years and things have changed considerbly in that time. With the majority of sites offering electric hook-up for tents (what luxury after having to depend on a 12 v battery!) would anyone use a combined microwave / grill for cooking in a tent? Seems it would be much easier than using the gas cooker and perhaps safer.

Just watch the wattage, that's all. A 10amp hookup will supply about 2300w before it trips. And microwaves have a power-up surge at the start. You'll need to look for a low powered one.

Never thought about a microwave. Would've thought it would take the whole camping experience away, you know with the bacon alarm clock and all.

Although my OH did kick off a bit when I asked to take TV and xbox............

Not for me, I like the novelty of having to cook differently and without certain things whilst camping, it's what appeals to me17

Each to their own though! I guess it depend's on the wattage of the microwave you itnended on using as from what I gather alot can trip the electric, best check with the campsite you would intend using it on.

Thanks for the replies, 17 I am well aware of watching the power usage (electronics engineer) although the campsites I have used so far have offered 16A hook-ups. The unit I was considering was a cheapy being sold by the local supermarket for less than £50. This has a 1000w microwave and a 800w grill which would take around 8amps if both were used together. The main reason for considering cooking by microwave is that the tent I have has no safe cooking area inside and with our wonderful weather, the bacon butties could get rather soggy17
