On our first camping trip back in june we all went cycling, along with our jack russell. Now, he was fine going, but coming back my hubbie had to carrie him in his arm (whilst still cycling), as he was shattered. So im looking to buy either a front handlebar basket or bike trailer, but seen as though weve just bought a new tent (outwell georgia L) dont want to spend alot. Ive searched ebay, but still expensive! Has anybody any ideas as to where i can buy one suitable for dog on the cheap, and i would be very interested on what people do with there dogs whilst cycling.??
Surely it cant just be our dog that gets too tired on the way back?
Hi, thanks Dave60438 another poster has just mentioned these! I guess it may be the only option. Will have to put a fleecy blanket in or something to make it more comfortable for him!
BTW, I do not take Borda out cycling on normal roads, only dirt tracks and paths away from cars.
The reason I got this lead is that my folding bike cannot be fitted with a carrier for him. Besides, he loves to run along the bike and it is good exercise for both of us. In areas where it is not required to keep dogs on leads, he will just run along the bike and follow me.

I too have a Jack Russell and he has a Basil whicker dog carrier basket with a lid to stop him jumping out. They are quite expensive to buy about £100 plus you need a rear pannier and fitting. However, my dog can go anywhere with me now. If he's tired of running by my bike, he comes over to me and looks at the basket. He has a ride with me for 10 mins to get his breath back, and then he's back chasing rabbits again.
I go down to the New Forest camping a lot and every now and again, we have to go on the road. I just pop him in the basket until we hit the next off-road track. Sorted!
BTW, I only do a couple of miles or so with Borda on the lead, maximum 6.5miles so far in one day over 2h!

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have one of those bars with a lead attached that fits to the bike, as he can safely run at the side of the bike, but just need something for when his little legs can take no more!!! Will order a basket from amazon.
I joined the CTC forum once specifically to ask about cycling with my dog attatched either to me or the bike and was shot down in flames by their members for asking about such a dangerous persuit!
I'm pleased to see some of you do cycle with dogs without any problems. I may revisit the idea.
(I didn't post on that forum for long, thank goodness the members here are alot more helpful and friendly).
what we had for our dog was a child trailer! an old seconhand one, we just clipped one of the child restraints to her coller and put a couple of her blankets in it and she was happy as larry.
Mrs X, I would rather not go down a road with my dog on a lead and me on a bike if I can avoid it. Once, a lorry overtook me and my dog took fright and slipped the lead. That's why I love the Basil basket, I know my dog is completely safe and if I want speed up the pace, I'm completely free to do so.
I have yet to do any cycling on the road on my own without Borda, as I am too scared I may get hit by cars/lorries etc..., no joke!
