i am amuused by all you people who need EHU for extra lighting, as me and hubby have just been away for 2 weeks and i think there was only night when we were up late enough for it to be dark and need any lighting!!!! lol 17

A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

I have been following this thread with great interest.

We don't have an EHU. I can't think what we would use it for.

But I do think it comes down to what you are used to. I have been camping with a 4 month old and the only option I had was a bog standard cool box. We managed.... eldest daughter survived!  LOL.

My mother took me camping when i was newly born.................no cool boxes.....she had to use buckets and cold water to keep thing cool. (still very handy for cooling beer and wine). Obviously I survived.LOL

Times have changed and what seems essential today wasn't around when I first started camping.  If you want EHU have it if you don't, don't simples!!!

By the way my mum was camping when she was 8 months pregnant with me and I have camped ever since. 52 years.........

It can also be madening when you get settled in for the night with a good book only to have the batteries in the light go dead.

We use headlights for reading and mine is in almost nightly use all year round, as I read by it in bed as the light doesn't keep Mr Fran awake. It takes 3 AAA batteries and I don't think I use 3 sets of batteries a year. I don't think that's in any sense uneconomical, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it worked out cheaper than having the bedside light on. It also gives plenty of warning as it fades over time rahter than just dying suddenly.

Have just bought a new EHU for our new tent. Have been using a 'homemade' EHU when we used the camper, ..with a RCD..before you lot start panicing..any how, know we needed a proper one for tent camping as we have a large 3 way fridge, and would prefer to use it with the lekky, and also the fan heater at night when it gets chilly...yep, even the summer if needs must. Great for charging up PSP's, phones etc..and even lights if necessary. BUT if we choose to camp where there is no EHU, that's not a problem as we can still use battery operated equipment, gas etc.

We plan a 2 week camping holiday in France next year to a site we went to a couple of years ago in the camper. This time in the car, trailer and roof box with the new tent.  They have EHU, and we plan to take lekky kettle and a fan heater that cools as well as warms.

Looking forward to it, but still needs lots before we go: Two new camp beds, new sleeping bags, storage cupboard and a trailer extention to name a few, as well as the lekky kettle and the fan heater.

Surely the main point in this discussion is that everyone has a choice.

As many have said each to their own.

Thanks, a very sensible comment, and good way to end this fairly now, as it hardly needed asking in the first place

Thanks to all who contributed.
