First trip coming up and after reading various threads about cooking etc, I'm beginning to wonder whether I need to get a windbreak or some kind of shelter for cooking
I've got a single burner stove thingy and a couple of disposable bbq's and was planning to cook just outside the tent. As I'm still very new to camping, I don't have loads of kit!
Instead of a windbreak, would one of those kids pop-up beach shelter things do? Just wondering whether I need to have some kind of shelter to keep the wind/weather off the stove or bbq.
Spose it might be useful if its windy, we got rid of ours now, de-cluttering and the old fashioned kind was hassle hammering in, the new light weight ones keep blowing down, but then we have a canopy on our tent so acts the same as a wind break.
Would be handy anyway for you, stop you getting a chill, if it's a suitcase stove deffo, ours did'nt work very well in a breeze. Plus set it up on a table for comfort, sorted
Don't get too carried away with what you read here otherwise you'll need a bigger car too! As your new, just go and enjoy yourself. You'll soon find out if you need extra gear for next time. Part of the fun of camping is the challenges it throws up on occasion, even if you've been doing it for years.
i was in two minds myself last week and as im going away for 5 days decided to get a windbreaker and thought if it rains i'll use my golfing brolly on top. bought mine off ebay 9.99+4.95 pp. if your cooking on floor u could just use a big brolly.
hasnt arrived yet only bought it friday.but looks like same one from wilkos. and if its rubbish i'll just put it back on ebay. at least its not too much to shell out if you find you dont need it.
A windbreak combined with a concertina kitchen stand makes cooking so much easier, especially for suitcase stoves as the others have already mentioned.
The windbreak will prevent the kitchen stand from being blown over. However, if the stand is sturdy enough, e.g. if you put your water carriers at the bottom self, then it should be ok.
Apart from making life easier when cooking, windbreaks do break up the wind so that it is less blowy across the front of the tent.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll go for a windbreaker and see how we get on. I've got a folding table to put the stove on, so hopefully that will be ok.
I would definately go for the wind break around the cooker. It makes cooking much easier and quicker and safer. A huge brolly over the top will be fine in light rain/ drizzle, if it gets any worse than that, go to the nearest pub !!
