Another post lol, on a roll today i think.

This is our first season camping and we've been away 4 times now and are loving it! We went camping this weekend and left home friday evening. There was 'weather warnings' on the met office site for heavy rain on the friday but sunny over the weekend so we figured we would just go for it as it was close enough to head home if it got too bad. Several of the neighbours commented on our crazyness though and i overheard one muttering about us being irresponsible taking a toddler camping when there are blackouts (we were all havign a power cut at the time). As it turned out it rained on the 10 minute journey to the site but we beat the rain there and the pitch was perfectly dry. Got the tent up and everythign set up and then it rained very heavily for an hour but not a drop of rain came in the tent. By the morning the sun was shining and we had glorious weather for the rest of the trip.

Just wondering what everyone else does regarding camping if the weather isnt forecast to be great? do people put off camping or do you all go regardless? I dont mind a bit of mud etc but did have a wobble after hearing the neighbours comment that maybe we were doing something silly by going??

thanks

Sam

I went at the weekend, even though the weather forecast said Friday night would be the worst for wind and rain.  I drove to Dorset through some very heavy showers, the ones where you can't see a thing and have to drive slow, but when I got to site, it was dry, sunny and breezy.

I was in a nice sheltered spot and got the tent up no problems and the next day, we woke to bright sunshine and a lovely warm day.

Although I had a radio, I didn't really hear any weather forecasts and just got on with the weekend.  I'd gone prepared with waterproofs etc and although it rained heavily Sunday night/Monday morning, we stayed warm and dry.  The weather improved so much in the morning yesterday that I took the dogs to the beach so as not to miss out on the sunshine.

If I'd waited for a good forecast, I probably wouldn't have gone

Edited to add, before I finished work on Friday people were telling me I was mad - we'd had huge rain and thunder!

We went to france when storms were forecast all week. I was a bit concerned but we had glorious weather and only 2 wet mornings. Recently the weather has not been as bad as forecast, so we often take the gamble, but have a back up plan eg come home if local, in France we were going to head south if it was awful. We take a toddler and there are some people (including my mother) who always think they are going to catch cold in a tent!

Where's the rule book that states you can't take toddlers camping???

Maybe the neighbours were jealous of you going away so many times and enjoying yourself! Don't let them worry you - you're the parent, and you know best - it's as simple as that!!

Kids love being out in all weathers and they should be enjoying themselve's in all season's! I would rather that than them sat at home watching tv all day!

We camped last week in bad weather, kids were all warm at night as wasn't that cold, had all waterproof's for the day time and had a ball17

We're due to go this Friday for two nights but at the moment the forecast is for heavy rain Friday/Saturday and showers on Sunday so I'm in two minds as to what to do - it's very overcast here and has been raining on and off all day. I don't fancy sitting in a boggy field in the pouring rain all weekend frankly.

We just go - regardless, nothing that a set of waterproofs and some wellies won't cope with. After all it has to stop raining sometime!!

I look at metcheck for days before we go and then wonder why because it never does what it says it will.
Don't take anything with us to get a forecast on whilst away so just cope with what it does when it does it.

We will go as planned, but make sure we have things to do, either places to visit or games to play, along with appropriate footwear and dry clothes. Last year in France it rained and rained and rained some more (so much that we had a stream running through our pitch) with thunder and lightning thrown in for good measure and we learned that the weather doesn't have to spoil your holiday but it can if you let it.
