Depends what you want, if you're happy with a field with few facilities then spontaneous camping is easy. C&CC CS's are perfect for tent campers as their only limit is for vans and campers.

If you want EHU and faciliites then it probably is harder.

Completely agree!

Last weekend, we were going to nip up to one of the (no pre-booking) National Trust sites in the Lake District.  Because we have three small kids, I thought on thursday that I might want a backup.  After ringing 20+ sites in the area, that were fully booked for the weekend, I moved my focus off the lakes - Fforrest Fields (a handy backup) was fully booked so I rang a couple of Certificated sites and found a great little site - Rowlestone Court.

If you look in the right places, at the smaller sites, you can find fantastic facilities, quiet sites at a low price!

I have just booked for tomorrow for 3 nights. It was the LAST pitch left though - it's gonna be chocca!

Last Friday we decided to go camping for the weekend and fancied somewhere in or around the Peak District. We usually go for sites with EHU, showers, washing up faciities, etc. so I started phoning round and had no luck with any sites that had all the facilites we'd normally look for.

I eventually got round to calling some of the sites that are literally a field with a toilet and a drinking water tap and managed to find a great site (The Pudding Room) for £5 a night. I'm not sure I'd stay somewhere without a shower for a whole week but for a last minute weekend away somewhere it was perfect.

I've found if you arrive midweek you can usually get a spot and a lot of sites will put themsleves out to make room for you at the weekend to save you leaving, once you've been there a few days.

At weekends I wouldn't risk it now, anywhere decent seems to be full in high season.
