We purchased a vango tent back in May and we have used it 3 times. On our last trip we noticed one of the poles has split and also when we putting the tent back into its back the bag has ripped and we can no longer zip the bag up. When I called the place we purchased it from they advised it was down to wear and tear and not covered by the warrenty.

Is this correct ?

Seems to be a lot of complaints on here recently about vango pole quality, I would not put it down to wear and tear. the poles are obviously not fit for purpose if they break that easily.

Sorry forgot my manners, welcome to UKCS

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979

a problem that arises within six months of buying the product, then it's up to the retailer to prove that the goods were fit for purpose – or 'as described' – when it sold them. under "normal ware and tear" and you are clearly under that time limit.

It is also responsible for proving that the problem was caused by you (for example, because you had an accident with the item that damaged it).

Beyond six months, it's up to you to prove that the problem was the retailer's

it is not correct that this will effect your warranty.

There was a brilliant posting by Valk_scot  on the reason manufacturer's (none of them) cover poles, but the thread was a little contentious, and seems to have been removed.

This is what Vango's guarantee doesn't cover:

  • General wear & tear
  • Flaws in the fabric, if caused by excessive wear
  • Leaking through fabric if it is suffering from UV degradation (Often leaking fabric is in fact condensation on the inside of the fabric)
  • Leaking through seams if the there has been excessive abrasion of the seams or the seam sealant tape
  • Broken zips if caused by forcing, jamming or improper use
  • Seams coming apart if caused by over tensioning / stretching
  • Broken buckles if they have been subjected to undue force or abrasion
  • Broken carry / roller bag if they are over loaded, used for carrying other items or used as a toy
  • All Pole breakages- these are treated as "fair wear & tear"
  • Collateral damage from a pole breakage
  • UV degradation
  • Condensation, usually caused by lack of ventilation
  • Commercial use by rental companies, use by youth groups (Scouts, Guides, BB, DOE).

You can source replacements here

http://www.tentspares.co.uk/index.php

Assuming the bag wasn't ripped when you bought it, there wouldn't seem to be any hope of a warranty claim there either, and it might be an opportunity to get a bigger bag at the same time.

If the tent was only bought in May this year then the Sale of Goods Act overrules Vango's warranty and the poles should be replaced if they were not subject to undue use.

Apart from anything else your retailer may just change the poles anyway regardless of warranty/laws just to have a happy customer.

We have an Outwell Idaho tent and one of our poles broke a year after we purchased it from Go Outdoors (we had only used the tent once). The manager was fantastic: he just went and got us a new pole from the store room.17

Lol...thank you for that. I wish I'd kept it now! I will go and see if it's still in the cache anywhere.

Thank you so much for your responses and for posting the vango warrenty. We purchased the special edition vango weekender which is basically the icarus.

We have put the tent in a larger bag that we had anyway but just abit peeved that it has ripped already. I think I might give the store a call anyway. My hubby went in last time but he just accepted it ( where I am more up to a challenge !!! ).

Thanks again for the advice. This forums have been a godsend for advice as we are new to camping this year.

One tip for Icarus owners regarding poles.

Do not attempt to put the tent up as one, ie with bedrooms hung. Vango say this is ok but personally I think it strains the poles far to much and not in a way they are designed to be used. After all it only takes a minute to hang the bedrooms once the tent is up.
