We use a rechargable light. the one with two bulbs in and that we find is enough. Along with the light given off by out halogen heater.
In the pods we just use torches.
I love the old gas lights but can't use them in a tent with sewn in groundsheet. so Ive been told. I think these give off a much warmer light than the newer lights
Welcome to the site. I think you will find it is one of the most helpful on the web.
I am sure you will get loads of answers and I can't pretend to know it all but I tend to use battery lanterns in the main part of the tent and headlights for reading in bed with a couple of windup torches for emergencies and trips to the loo in the dark. That covers most eventualities.
Whatever you choose, enjoy your holiday and you will soon become as addicted as the rest of us.
the windup ones are alright, but as far as the one I had was concerned it seemed to stay lit for a little while then go so low it was like sitting in the dark again. I use the gas lanterns, but the UFO lights are very effective from poundland - as are the little lanterns they do.

I picked up a couple of the UFO lights when I was in Asda yesterday and they're great! Wouldn't have known to look there if it wasn't for the recommendations here, so thanks for that
Ive got a zig and use a gas lantern. As long as you are careful when lighting and make sure you turn the gas off when you are finished then everything should be fine. Ventilation is the name of the game. We use 2 in our tent and so far ive not managed to poison anyone. A lantern used in the correct manner (what it is designed to do) should be perfectly safe. Gas will only gather at the ground level of a tent if the lantern is faulty i.e. not burning the gas like its designed to do. As ive mentioned before, folks are taking things that are not designed for outdoor use into tents and plugging them into the mains. Table lamps, TVs, etc. (I too am guilty of this on occasion). Theres more risk of those killing you than a lantern that is designed for use when camping to be honest. Its up to you though what you choose. I like the light the gas lanterns give off and a big gas cartridge usually lasts us a week in the summer months. We can go through 4 packs of AA batteries every 3 days with the battery powered lighting. However the poundland lights are a good buy too.

1 Headtorches all round - most single useful light for camping - useful for cooking in the dark, reading, checking pegs in ther dark, going to the loo etc. etc. (though DD1 has said she doesn't like them so much at the moment, so am putting a small hand torch in for her next time - though of course you can hold a head torch in your hand.
2. Main tent lighting - an 80W gas lantern - generic sort that fits onto a Coleman gas cylinder - probably use between 1-2 cylinders in a week?
Though considering upgrading to a camping Gaz Stellia - which has 2 mantles - lots more light was impressed by a friends a few weeks ago.
3 A rechageable/windup LED Lantern - TBh the windup aspect of such things is a bit of a gimmick given the amount of winding you need to do, but I guess might be useful in an emergency. Bought as not always happy with our clumsy kids a round a gas lantern. No where near as bright as the gas light though. Use it around the table and the kids use it in the inner. Lasts about 3 days (I keep meaning to upgrade the battery pack)
Rechargeable is ok, but you do nof course need to have the means to recharge whilst camping (ours can be recharged from mains or car).
I picked up a couple of the 'UFO' lights in Wilkinsons the other day, will try them out next time as well for additioanl light
Thanks Dezzie, you just saved me from scouring the locality for lights. Shall continue to use gas light safely-ie only when we are in tent, and kids have battery thing in our absence. So excited off to Cornwall on Sunday
