I have always washed mine over the years, even the good ones that my son used for orienteering, just hung them out to dry and they were as good as new, instructions should be on the sleeping bag as to what temperature is best

We stick ours in the washing machine one at  a time on a cool wash, then hang them out to dry on the line. not had a problem so far, It may depend on the material the sleeping bag is made up from though.

Now this may surprise some peeps on here who know MY outlook on all things houseyworky related BUT as the sleeping bags come under the heading of my beloved tin tent.....they get special dispensation coz I'd do anything for my tin tent.

Anyhoo, I always shove mine in that big metal drum thingy that seems to make things clean by some miracle all of it's own! It does have to be a large capacity jobby though.

My trouble starts when they're still damp coz they're too heavy for me and me decrepit body to manage so hubby has to be enlisted to do the carrying out and pegging out business. As already said by another poster though, the care instructions should be in them..... somewhere. So much cheaper than giving a dry cleaner yer dosh, especially in this credit crunch eh?

Only EIGHT more sleeps till Mevagissey. Whey hey

Sleeping bags can be washed but it will shorten their life and possibly affect their performance. Best to avoid washing as far as you possibly can by always using sleeping bag liners and keeping the sleeping bags well aired while you are away and then a thorough line-airing when you get home.

We changed to duvets instead because my king size sleeping bag wouldn't fit in my washing machine and I got sick of taking it to the launderette, and the teens have army ones with waterproof backs which are dry clean only.

But when we had cheap ones I always washed them in the machine with no problems.

I wonder if it is possible to use one of those dry foams you can get and then brush it?

Washing down sleeping bags reduces the insulation qualities...dry clean only.
