Hi All

I haven't been on here for what seems like ages, well i have now decided that due to lifes ups and downs i've been through its time to sell up all my camping gear, its not been used for well over 18 months and since my hubby passed away, i just dont want to do the camping thing anymore and its just sat in my cupboard under the stairs gathering dust.

My question is, where is the best place to be advertising it for sal?, and would it be better to sell it all individually or just sell it togeteher as one job lot?, and beleive me theres plenty of it to sell.

Also is it the wrong time of the year to be selling it and would it be worth waiting till next spring to offlaod it all?

Hopefully all you people in the know can offer me some good advise.

Thanks

Ruth.

Very sad to hear.....

I would suggest that if you are happy with the hassle, you would generate more revenue from selling things individually rather than a job lot.

Although a competitively priced job lot will attract interest from bargain hunters (who may just buy the lot, and then sell indivudal items on eBay)

As for when to sell...... I think if the weather picks up in the next fortnight, then that would help immediate sales!

As for where to sell...... classifieds on this site seem pretty good, or eBay.  What are the local papers classifieds like where you are? (We can place ads for items up to £100 for free in our local paper)

If you look at the prices being asked for overseas holidays at the moment then its no wonder people are looking to holiday in the uk.

With that in mind I would say that now would be as good a time as any to sell your equipment.

I would be tempted to split it into smaller lots.
Although as previously stated, it might be more hassle for you, I think it would attract a better price.

Good Luck!

Sorry to hear you are selling up Ruth but understand your reasons.

On here, advertising is free and everyone looking will be interested in what you are selling, you can even put posts on here to tell people what you are selling so they can find them easier.

Ebay is expensive and you have to have an account to use it so depends what you want.  Local supermarkets/shops might be an idea too.

Good luck whatever you decide to do, im sure your stuff will make a family very happy indeed.  I know I would have appreciated it a few months ago 17

Thanks for all the advise, i have been having a browse over on ebay at prices things are going for just to give me an idea.

Guitarkid, i don't know if we can PM on here or what the rules are for selling but the Ontario 8 Is definately up for grabs,  it has only been used once and that was for a week in Somerset in 2007 after we bought it, and its never been out of the bag since, its far too huge for me to handle.

Hi Ruth.  Sorry to hear you are selling up but I understand your reasons.

Would a car boot sale be an option for selling your camping gear?  I don't know how practical that is where you live.  We have loads of them round here and people do seem to sell off camping stuff.

Ruth

I would guess to get the best value for money you would need to do  bit of both. Using auctions and selling privately in papers, online (here or maybe Preloved). There is money to be made on ebay if its the right product at the right time. I once sold a single roll of wallpaper border for over £30...4 times its retail value.

With Ebay you need to do your research and think about what impact the postal value will have. We have been looking to by things on Ebay for our first camping trip and two things that seem to have high resale values are 2 season and higher sleeping bags and Portable toilets. Smaller items like utensils, torches etc have low resale values you could get just as much at a car boot.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear about your loss and the decision to sell your camping gear.

I hope you would reconsider, as solo camping can be just as fun.

I too lost my late partner recently back in Nov 08 due to a boating accident, and my world fell apart. Emotionally I was in pieces, and am still liable to collapse in a heap from time to time.

It was a life changing moment, and I had to make certain adjustments to my lifestyle swiftly as I decided to keep his dog as my own.

I had only ever gone camping with him 4 times since 2006, and had reservations about going camping on my own.

However, I decided that although whoever is up there has a funny sense of humour, life is a b1tch, and it goes on without him.

Hence I decided to go camping on my own, and bought a smaller tent that I could pitch on my own, got a roof box for the gears (we used to take 2 cars), and some compact space-saving gears.

My first solo trip was in Jun 09 back to a campsite that we went last year, and had a jolly good time with Borda.

I had another good trip with him last month, again in a campsite that my late partner and I used before.

I shall go again in mid Sep 09 (postponed from end of Aug/early Sep 09 due to work committment) and stay at a new campsite in an unfamiliar location.

If I could find an EHU pitch close to home for August Bank Holiday weekend, then I shall go again sooner than mid Sep 09, as I am itching to go again.

I must admit life is not the same without my late partner, and I miss him dearly. However, he would not want me to feel sorry for myself, and would want me to enjoy life as much as I could. I know he'll be watching over Borda and me wherever we go.

There are quite a few solo ladies who go camping on their own, perhaps you would like to join us. fran100 started a thread in the Solo and Single Parent Camping section with the aim to organise a trip next year.

Everyone's circumstances are different, and what works for me may not work for other people.

If you decide to sell up, then I would advise eBay or Preloved.co.uk. Preloved may be easier to advertise, however, it may carry higher risk. If you take precautions such as using PayPal, insist of money reaching first before delivery/collection etc., then you should be ok.

I hope you will find rays of sunshine again soon. Take care!

<<< hug
