I bought an inflatable matress, which i used last weekend, quite comfy, but it was chilly one night and I was quite cold, despite my 3 seasons sleeping bag.
Went off for a jaunt to Whitby this weekend, got there, realised I had forgotten my matress and sleeping bag, so went and bought sleeping bag and self inflating matress.
Don't think I was as comfortable, but ad no problems with cold.
Plan to keep one matress and sell the other, but can't decide which to keep!
We think that inflatables are more comfortable. We always add a fitted fleece under-blanket to it, under the sleeping bag. That tends to keep out the cold better. Also under the mattress we roll out some of that expanded foam non slip matting stuff. It helps with the insulation a tiny bit and stops the mattress sliding about.
Self-inflatables do not have enough give in them for someone of my weight sadly.
I would recomend a a folding camp bed, keeps you off the floor so with a good bag warmer too. we've had ours for a couple of years now and wouldn't go back to a blow up mattress
Get an exped downmat. They are inflatable and therefore comfortable, but have down inside to stop the cold. I feel the cold awfully but camp in January quite happily on a Downmat and an alpine rated down sleeping bag.
------------- There will be good days and bad days and THIS is one of them.
By trial and error we have gone through the whole camp bed regime and finally come up with something we both agree on, i prefer the blow up mattress but her ladyship wanted a camp bed, i bought two camp beds off ebay for £16 and we tried them out, i didn't like it but OH does, i decided to go back to my trusty inflatable until in a flash of inspiration i decided to combine the two
We now have a great bed off the ground and comfortable, roll mats take care of the insulation
I have to agree with the airbed on campbed route as I have just returned from a weeks camping having slept well every night. When I went camping two years ago I slept on an airbed, it was uncomfortable, last year a campbed - even more uncomfortable but this year I combined the two and it was wonderful.
I put a picnic blanket over the airbed and then covered the lot with a sheet. I then slept under an opened up sleeping bag and two layers of fleece blanket - very cosy.
i put roll mats under my inflatable mattress, which keeps us a lot warmer. Guess its just extra insulation but i was really surprised how much colder i was when i left them out one night.
i think its all personal preference, if i was you, seen as you have both- try them both out again and see which you like best!
on our first camping trip we both brought a double airbed.we decided to inflate them both and put one on top of the other!! lol!. its very comfy. we allways take them both now when we go away
well you have to be comfy when your asleep!!!!!!!!
I also have this problem!! I'm a big wimp and can't stand getting cold at night. We have an inflatable (Coleman) that turns into a bed with sleeping bag and blanket over that, but I'm still chilly, even with my tracksuit on.
What is the best bed? And further more what is the best sleeping bag?
On top we put "the bed" this is a sleeping bag made from a memory foam topper, a double duvet and 2 duvet covers which hold it all together with zips either side for ventilation and if it's warm (we get warm)
I got the idea from Raself duvalays which I saw at the motorhome show.
Inside we have a silk double liner (this comes out for washing every trip) the duvet covers just get washed when necessary!!
------------- Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.
Interested in this thread too as I have an awful time sleeping when camping. I've tried a self inflating mattress, not enough for me. Tried a metal frame camp bed but found it too hard although was warmer being off the floor, then tried an air bed and found it comfiest but was cold. Hubby uses his army camp cot/bed but ideally would like a double sized double height air bed (to himself)..lol.
