we have a khyam tourer 400 and are going away for a week this weekend.  after looking at the pictures of our tent pitched from last hol and viewing the instruction dvd again i noticed that what i think are called the mud flaps are pegged out when we pitched whereas you can't see them on the dvd.hubby says they are fine pegged out i'm not so sure.can anyone help.

I think they're supposed to be tucked in and pegged down with groundsheet pegs, then the groundsheet placed over them. That's what we do with them on our XL Excelsior, anyway.

That way, they keep all the draughts out, and any water runs underneath your groundsheet, rather than under the mudflap and into the tent.

I may be wrong, but if its wet don`t you peg them under the ground sheet, and if its dry peg them out to encouage some ventilation?.

But you have to decide where to put them when you pitch really. Otherwise you'd have to move all your stuff and lift the groundsheet at the edges to tuck the flaps under and peg them down.

That's quite a faff on our Khyam, the groundsheet loops are pegged out outside, and you have to poke them out of the tent at the corners. It would be a real pain trying to do it in a tent full of gear.

If we were having a heatwave and the forecast was for it to stay that way, I might risk leaving them loose, but not otherwise.  

I think the Outwell must have a different arrangement.

The Khyam flaps have big eyelets, inset quite a way from the edge of the flap, that you peg down with "mushroom" type pegs. If you got a problem, I think the eyelet would detach from the fabric and all you'd end up with would be an enlarged hole sans eyelet.

If you used a crook-top normal tent peg, not only would you risk a second hole where the point of the crook met the fabric, but you'd be likely to risk damaging the groundsheet when you laid it on top.

This is my outwell all pegged out. The eyelets are right at the edge so I always assumed you should peg out, sounds as if the Khyam is different though

If you tuck your flaps inside under the groundsheet you don't have to peg them. I've never pegged a stormflap down in my life. I've got enough gear sitting round inside the edges of the tent to hold everything down perfectly well.

That's assumng you can tuck them inside of course. Some stormflaps are not slit at the poles so you can only peg them outside. But traditionally all stormflaps did tuck inside and hardly any of them were ever pegged down.

We didn't bother the first time we pitched it, but it was very windy and some of them came untucked.

Of course, it's possible they may have been assisted by little terrier snouts.

We have a Tourer 200 and always peg the mud flaps 'under'.  We use plastic mushroom pegs.  The first ones I bought, that seem to be available at most places, have too large a diameter to fit through the mud flap eyelets.  FInally found these ones that fit perfectly:
