we too went on our first camping trip friday, top of a hill other side of huddersfield / halifax soon after pitching the tent which as you say went up in about 45 minutes ours is a brand new never been used gelert horizon 8 it began to get windy but not only that the wind changed direction so it was hitting tent broadside on it got to gale force at times then the heavens opened and we had torrential rain the problem we had was that the site was over a shale so there was about 4" of soil to peg into so i pegged it with the pegs sloping not a good idea as we got no sleep the first night the tent like yo say was really flapping the next morning when we got up the side the wind was beating the tent at some (2) pegs were pulled out others were half out, now here is a good point where this forum comes into its own i had read on a post about the longer like cross ended rock pegs so i had bought 2 packs i replaced hitting them vertical and the tent was solid to a point it still moved but these horizon tents are very high i had a little condensation on the inside when all the family came to our tent at night and i had closed all the vents lesson 2 i quickly opened and we were ok then, as for the rain it was bouncing about 1 foot off floor and no leaks also reading about footprints on here paid off too it is one of the best items i bought it lets you keep tent bottom clean as well as giving you position to peg tent

Ahem. You're not supposed to put tent pegs in vertically. You should put them in at an angle of 45` with the points facing back towards the tent. This makes the guyline less likely to slip off the peg.

Yes so the guyline and the angle of the peg should make a 90 degree angle.
